Summary: Yasu thinks that Eito needs to find their christmas spirit.

Everyone’s really busy at this time of year and it’s starting to show. Their dressing room - which is normally a hive of activity and noise - is unnaturally quite. The seven of them are in various states of undress and consciousness, lazing on the couches and chairs. Except Yoko, who’s passed out naked on the floor. Hina’s right foot is resting on his lower back, stretched out from the rest of him drowsing lightly on the sofa. His head is in Subaru’s lap. Subaru is awake but has his eyes closed as if he’s willing himself to sleep.

Yasu is also awake but he’s got his eyes open and it studying them all intently. Christmas is always busy for them, between concerts and countdown and Kouhaku, but this year they seem to be extra busy. The Eight Rangers sequel pre-production is already in full swing, so they have that to deal with. Plus all their standard commitments - radio shows, TV appearances, performances etc.

His eyes settle on the sofa where Okura and Ryo are curled up together. Unsurprisingly they’re both dead to the world. Okura has his doctor drama shooting at the moment, and Ryo is still doing his fortune-telling one. Plus Ryo has one movie out soon and another in a month or two. Yasu wonders if Ryo has ever heard of the word “workaholic” and whether they’ll need to stage an intervention for him at some point. That point has probably long passed, he muses to himself.

At that point Maru startles from his doze and mumbles something about the penguins attacking. He peers blearily at Yasu, seemingly expecting an answer. “Don’t worry, we have polar bears!” Yasu replies nonsensically. It seems to work though because Maru closes his eyes again and smiles as he drifts back into his slumber.

Basically his bandmates are tired and in urgent need of a pick me up. And with Christmas just around the corner Yasu knows just the thing.

He starts off with enlisting help. He knows he can’t do it alone, so he ropes Maru into helping him. It hadn’t taken much convincing. Or any at all in fact. He’d been nodding his agreement before Yasu had even finished talking.

Their first plan had been location. Yasu had wanted to do it at their dressing room, but that would have been difficult to organise food-wise. Yasu’s apartment didn’t have an oven, and neither did Maru’s.

Luckily some of the other members did have ovens, and Yasu has keys to their homes. He knows that Ryo’s kitchen isn’t just for show - with his impressive array of chef quality knives and expensive saucepans that he knows how to use - but he also thinks that Ryo might kill him for being in his kitchen without him. He’s almost as possessive with his pans as he was his guitars. No wonder he’s single, Yasu thinks to himself. No woman can compete.

“Why don’t we just ask him?”, Maru suggests. “Because I want this to be a nice surprise. Which won’t work if they all know about it beforehand!” Yasu explains. “Plus Ryo is busy so the added stress would kind of defeat the point”.

“Defeat the point of what?” booms a voice from behind them.

They both jump as Hina walks up and joins them. They’d been so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn’t noticed him behind them at all.

Yasu immediately scrambles to hide his notes, but Hina just leans over and pulls Maru’s copies out of his hands. Yasu sighs and gives up the fight. There’s no point anymore. Hina is just reading through the brightly coloured pages when Yoko flails up and drapes himself over Maru’s back.

“What are you guys all doing?” he whines.

“Yasu and Maru are planning a surprise christmas party for us” Hina replies, not looking up from the notes. Yasu just sighs. The cat is well and truly out of the bag now.

“Hey guys!” Yoko shouts over to where Subaru and Ryo are playing the “pile random objects on your unconscious friend” game with a sleeping Okura. “Yasu is throwing us a surprise party for christmas!”

Yasu glares at Yoko as Subaru runs up and jumps on him. “Awww, you didn’t have to do that!” he shrieks into Yasu’s ear. Ryo ambles up and joins the rest of them.

“Doesn’t it ruin the surprise if we already know about it?” he asks, looking confused.

Yasu’s glad that someone gets it.

“Don’t be stupid Dokkun. Now that we all know, that means we can help and make the surprise even better!”

Hina’s eyes cross while his attempt to follow Yoko’s own special brand of logic, but Subaru is nodding his head in agreement. Maru beams with happiness as he grabs Yasu’s notes from where they’re halfway stuck down the sofa cushions and thrusts them underneath Ryo’s nose.

“Neither me nor Yasu have an oven so we were wondering if we could use your oven to make the dinner in?” he asks excitedly.

“Absolutely not!” Ryo exclaims, looking horrified at the thought of someone defiling his precious kitchen. Maru looks crestfallen for a moment, until Ryo grabs the notes and says “ I’ll make dinner”. He then grabs a coloured marker from Yasu’s stash and sits down to write a menu.

“In that case, I’ll get the tree”, Hina declares as he finally relinquishes his hold on Maru’s notes. Subaru decides that he’ll make a compilation of christmas music to play at the party, Yoko nominates himself to pick up the drink and Maru announces that he and Yasu will be in charge of decorations, with Yasu as chief co-ordinator for all of them.

It’s at this point that Okura finally jerks himself awake, sending a cascade of cushions and jackets to the floor and causing Subaru to have a giggle fit. He rolls off of the couch and ambles over to them, yawning and scratching his neck.

“What’s going on?” he asks, looking over Ryo’s shoulder at where he’s furiously scribbling.

“We’re planning our surprise christmas party” Yasu tells him, to which he nods as though this is a normal incidence.

He looks around and a thought appears to occur to him. “I don’t have to do anything do I?” he asks.

“Nah, we’ve all got it covered” Yasu smiles. There’s no other jobs left over for Okura to take. They agree to meet in a weeks time at Ryo’s apartment. It gives them all enough time to do their various jobs, working around their actual jobs, the ones that pay them. Yasu is looking forward to it.

********************************************************************************

A week later they’re all in Ryo’s flat putting the final touches on the tree while Ryo is in the kitchen finishing up the dinner. He comes into the room wearing his “Kiss me, I’m the chef!” apron and pink and yellow striped oven gloves, while carrying a massive tray with a gigantic ham on it and sets it on the table with a flourish. Yasu stifles the urge to clap.

“Food’s ready!” Ryo declares, wearing a big grin. Okura drools at the sight of the ham.

“Tree too” Yoko says.

Yasu starts to head towards the table, but is stopped by Maru’s hand on his shoulder. He turns, confused.

“We haven’t done the surprise yet” he says, as though that explains everything.

“Come on you lot” Hina shouts, despite the fact that everyone is literally meters away from him. They all troop out of the door. Maru rushes around the room, making sure that everything is in it’s place. The presents under the tree, the table set and with dinner on it waiting to be served, the christmas music playing in the background.

Yasu watches amusedly until Maru comes back with a party popper and hands it to him. “Now the surprise party can start!” Maru stage whispers, making a silly face and grinning at the same time. Yasu can’t help but laugh. But quietly. He wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise after all.

Just then they hear Ryo’s key turn in the lock and Maru quickly ducks down behind the table and motions for Yasu to hide as well. Yasu moves so that he’s hidden behind the door, and listens to the other five members talking inanely about the weather.

Then the door opens and they enter the living room, stopping to gasp in shock - some sounding faker than others - at the winter wonderland that Ryo’s living room has been transformed into. Yasu jumps out from behind the door at the same time as Maru pops up from the table, both pulling their poppers and shouting “Surprise!” at the top of their lungs.

The other members laugh as they all hug Yasu to thank him for organising the “wonderful surprise”.

“I had no idea!” Subaru intones deadpan.

“None at all!” Yoko exclaims, grinning.

“A complete surprise!” Ryo says, sounding totally sincere and making Yasu laugh.

The laughter continues as they all sit down to eat, having decided it would be inhumane to make Okura wait any longer. He looks guiltily around the group.

“I feel bad that I didn’t do anything to contribute to the party” he says.

“Don’t worry, you can do the washing up” Ryo suggests helpfully.

Okura’s aghast expression sets them all laughing again.

“I’m just kidding!” Ryo says, “I have a dishwasher”.

“Idiot!” Hina booms as he slaps Ryo over the head, almost causing him to drop the plate of potatoes he’s holding.

Yasu looks around the table as everyone laughs again. It may not turned out to be much of a surprise, but the party was certainly a success. Their missing energy had returned and everyone was happy and smiling.

And after all Yasu thought to himself, Isn’t that what christmas is all about?
