Author's Note: From a fic prompt meme on tumblr that I forgot all about until today.
Shige has spent his entire life being mocked for his intelligence so he cannot wait to go to college. After all, people are there because they want to be, because they value learning.
He's shown around on his first day by an upperclassman called Koyama, who seems very friendly and eager to help. He's given a tour of the campus, with Koyama pointing out things that he thinks Shige would be especially interested in.
They finish up at Shige's room, where he had earlier deposited his bag. His roommate hadn't yet arrived and so Shige had claimed the left side of the room, placing his bags onto the bed. That way he had a nice view out the window from his desk, which always helped him when he was studying.
Just as they reach his door Koyama gets a phone call and so has to disappear, but he makes Shige promise to meet him for breakfast tomorrow. Shige readily agrees, glad that he'll have someone to sit with, and hopes that him and Koyama will become friends.
He enters his room and stops short. All of his stuff has been moved to the right side of the room and in its place is a boy his age with platinum hair. He's lounging on what was supposed to be Shige's bed and is bopping his head along to the music playing in his ears. It's then that Shige spots his iPod in this strangers hand.
Shige pauses, blinking stupidly in the still open doorway, and that's when the boy opens his eyes. He regard Shige for a second and then leaps off of the bed, tossing Shige's iPod to the side and runs straight up and grabs Shige in a bone-crushing hug.
Shige splutters as he tries to disentangle himself from the over-enthusiastic stranger. He frowns and is about to yell at the boy for his complete disregard for personal space (and personal belongings when it comes to that) but is interrupted before he can even start his sentence.
“You’re Shige right?” he’s asked. Shige frowns harder and adds complete informality to the growing list of complaints he’s making inside his head. His roommate isn’t waiting for his response however.
“I’m Tegoshi. Pleased to meet you. I have a feeling we’re going to be great friends this year.”
Somehow Shige doubts that but he grudgingly shakes Tegoshi’s proffered hand, wondering what was wrong with a good old-fashioned bow. Internally he sighs and thinks to himself: This is going to be a long year.
