[After getting... acquainted with the receptionist, Ed has made it back and is waiting for the good doctor.]

Hello, Edward. I'm Doctor Watson.

[He's looking over Ed's medical records.] Looks like you've been in here before. Quite a few times, in fact.

Hi, Doctor.

[Ed has the grace to look somewhat sheepish at the mention of how often he's been to the clinic.]

I'm sure there are plenty worse than me.

No doubt there are. Some people just seem to end up in harm's way.

[Himself included, from time to time.]

So, what brings you in today?

[Man, finally someone who gets it.]

I know, right? It's not like I go looking for trouble.

[most of the time]

Just wanted to get my shoulder checked on, make sure everything's healing up the way it's supposed to, and to see if I could get cleared to start doing some light exercise.

All right then, let's take a look.

It says here you had some pieces of metal removed from your shoulder...?

[shucks off his jacket and starts unbuttoning his shirt]

Yeah, the remains of my automail port.

[he knocks on his left knee]

I lost an arm and leg in a trade and have had prosthetics since. My arm was held in a sort of stasis and was recently traded back, though right on top of the port.

[Okay...that's a new one.]

This "trade"... I take it this wasn't exactly a planned procedure then?

Not in the least. A last recourse, I suppose.

So your leg is still a prosthetic?

[John will take a look at his shoulder while they're talking.]

It is. Probably a good thing in the end really. My mechanic would have been sad if she could no longer work on me.

[The stitches from the surgery have already dissolved and the incisions healed cleanly, though with the massive scar that takes up almost a quarter of his upper chest any additional scars wouldn't really be noticeable. He's already started to build up the muscle on the smaller arm.]

No sign of infection or other problems with the surgery. Any numbness or tingling in your arm?

[Something else Edward said suddenly strikes him.]

You said 'mechanic', not 'doctor'.

No numbness, but... well, I've not really felt anything from that arm in years so I'm still adjusting to the additional sensory input.

[he chuckles slightly]

On my world, advanced prostheses are considered machinery. Medical doctors are familiar with it, but repairs and maintenance are done by special automail mechanics.

[he tugs at his trouser leg to expose the metal of his ankle]

[He's going to take a closer look for a moment before standing up again.] That's very impressive. We have nothing like that in my world.

I'm afraid transplants and prosthetics like this are a bit beyond my experience, but as far as I can tell, your shoulder is healing very nicely. I don't see any reason why you can't begin physical therapy.

I've found that to be the case with several worlds, despite them having more advanced technology in other areas.

[starts putting his shirt back on]

Great. I'll get started on it.

Try not to overdo it, and come back in a week or so for another check.
