There could always be counted on two settings of the Thor hallways- empty or full. Either there was a rush of people flooding the corridors at any given time, or they were blissfully quiet and empty. Atem very much enjoyed the latter option whenever he could find it. Sometimes he went out of his way to partake in it.
One of those times might have been now, or maybe he had just been lucky when he'd picked this route. As such, it was very hard to mistake that long train of hair... or was it the noise he heard first? Maybe he saw and heard the signs of distress at the same time.
Walking up slowly and carefully (so as to not step on her hair) behind her, his voice is quiet when he asks, "...Rapunzel?"
She heard her name being called and quickly wiped her eyes. She turned her head around to see who called her and put on a smile. " Atem! what brings you around here? I bet you wanted to take a good look outside, huh? It sure is beautiful.
She let out a small giggle and scooted over a little just in case he wanted to take a seat. She wasn't going to force him into it though.
He could have said any number of cynical things regarding how space would never be quite as beautiful as a real picture of nature or home. Now didn't seem like the right time for that, though. He wasn't so easily fooled into believing that she was okay. After all, he usually put on some facade or another of his own.
Stepping closer his eyes dropped to the window before he looked back at her. "Just going from one place to the next." The only reason anyone was even in the hallways right? He kept his expression neutral as he spoke again. "Is everything okay?"
" Yeah, of course! Why wouldn't I be, silly? I was just looking out the window.. I think I saw a shooting star just a second ago!" She laughed sheepishly as tried to tone her indoor voice. Atem wouldn't appreciate her screaming in his ear, at least she thinks he wouldn't. She wasn't trying to fool him with her actions, she just didn't want him to worry about her.
It wasn't his place to pry and he sometimes still had trouble not awkwardly navigating comforting social interaction. Still, it felt wrong to just leave and do nothing. Rapunzel was a nice friend and he was sure she'd try to do the same for him.
He moved closer still, sitting on the edge of the window next to her. His arms folded underneath his chest as his gaze strayed out the window. "Did you make a wish?"
She rubbed her eyes a little more still trying to hide what was obvious. Though what he said seemed to confuse her. she looked at him and tilted her head a little. Little things like that she wasn't taught as a kid.
It wasn't even something he believed in. But he was sure he'd at least overheard it a few times during his adventures and loads of more times here.
"I'm not sure." Even then he wasn't going to blindly lie to her. "I've heard that when you see a shooting star you're supposed to close your eyes and make a wish. They're supposed to come true." Childish nonsense really but maybe it would make her feel better somehow. Continuing to talk either way would be better than letting her sit here alone anyway.
That made her smile just a little. The idea sounded rather cute, but she wasn't sure if what he said was true or not. Though magic does exist to her, I mean just look at her hair, but magical hair and magical wishes seemed far too different to her. She pulled her knees back to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.
"Is that so? Maybe I will have to look for another one then."
Her smile triggered a weak one of his own. He hadn't been in the best mood lately. It was easier in that way to latch onto someone else who wasn't that happy.
"I don't know, really. I mean my only wish I ever had has already happened. I couldn't possibly ask for anything else, could I?" She laughs softly, though it sounds as cheerful as his smile.
"It might be better that way." The comment follows quickly after her laughter. There's a lapse before he decides what to say next before his eyes stray out the window once more.
"I think I also heard that if you tell people your wish it won't come true."
"I guess that's true. I don't know why, but it always seems to work that way, huh." She shifts a little in her spot and pulled her knees closer. She couldn't look Atem in the eye, she couldn't bring herself to.
He glances at her out of the side of his eye, unable to smile anymore. It was odd seeing her like this. Usually she was at least cheery, if not a ball of energy.
"What's on your mind?" He's trying not to be so awkward about this but as usual he's failing. Despite that he doesn't want to leave her like this.
" Wh-what do you mean? Nothing's on my mind at all! I'm just in the zone?" She gave him a sheepish smile, but still couldn't look him in the eye. Like a child, she couldn't do so when she was fibbing.
"You're not your usual self." He replied simply. Although eye contact was important, he was trying not to force it on her. If she didn't want to look at him he was fine with that, instead looking at the window when he spoke to her.
"If something's wrong I-" There was a minute pause. Was this his place? Did he belong in her affairs? "..I want to help." It seemed like he felt the answer was yes.
Hearing this caused her to frown. Atem was being a true friend, and she was sitting here being a brat. Her eyes watered a little as she gripped at her dress. " I... I've been thinking lately.. about my home.. mother.. about what everyone has been saying.
She stared into her lap and the tears started slowly forming.
