[Neku often wonders why he comes to events like this when he's got no business being here. they always seemed to happen when he was in a crappy mood; one was held when Beat had left, and now Shiki and Joshua were gone, too. ...maybe these things were supposed to help him cope? whatever. he's intentionally chosen a table where not many other people are sitting; he needs his space.

... he's actually not as annoyed or distant as he might normally seem, though. for one, he's actually appreciating the music that's playing right now, and the food's not half bad, either. maybe he's even in the need for company right now; he just doesn't know how to ask.]

[he doesn't have to ask with maka. she can sense it in his soul what he's feeling - in which is almost similar to how she's feeling right now with soul being gone along with shiki and joshua and with the whole situation with beat. and maka's been avoiding neku as well since beat's arrival and she knows deep down, she can't keep that up.]

[without saying a word, she walks over to neku's table and takes a seat next to him, quietly observing everyone else.]

[her sudden appearance doesn't even surprise him; he's not even going to comment on how she's been avoiding him. at least, not yet. he doesn't look at her as she sits down, though; he just sits back in his chair and closes his eyes.]

Hey.

[and likewise, she doesn't address him by glance. her fingers entwine with themselves as they rest on her lap.]

...What's up?

[ineuphony]

Nothing. [that's a lie, most obviously.] You?

[thenwhowas]

Same.

[he lets the silence permeate their conversation for a little longer, before breaking it once again-though only with a nonchalant comment.]

The music's decent this time, at least.

You like this kind of music?

It's better than the stuff they usually play at parties like this.

[there's a small chuckle and a faint smile.]

Heh. I can agree on that.

[however, her tiny humor and smile disappears rather quickly as she continues to watch the guests in silence.]

[and when she parts her lips, her tone comes out soft.]

... We've both lost someone pretty important, huh?

[while he manages a chuckle in response to her first comment, he's quickly returning to his more somber mood upon her second one.]

I've gone through worse.

[finally she looks over at him.]

Neku, will you look after Beat for me?

I already told you, I'm not his keeper.

[a short pause.]
