Oh the weather out side is... space, and the... heating system is so delightful... And since we've no place to go... Let it sno- er, be space! )
Not a gift then, but the prelude to one: an invitation to a restaurant specialised on kaiseki-ryōri.
The way Shiro has phrased it makes it clear that it's not a summons, and that he doesn't expect her to jump at his call. It's a request, a wish for her company written in a graceful hand.]

So she sent her acceptance back by handwritten letter on stationary that was lovely and thick, and met Shiro at the arranged time and place so that he could escort her to the restaurant. (She does so love culinary adventures and beyond knowing that the food will be Japanese, she really doesn't know what to expect.)]

So we are about to embark on a culinary adventure, are we? [She runs a light, appraising look over him, ending with a smile.] I cannot imagine a better guide.

Shiro simply breathes through it, his eyes on Irene showing the same sentiment.] 'es. There are few who'd be as good. [A short, almost noiseless shuffle as the aperitifs and the appetizers are brought.]
As there are few who possess the grace to sit where you do, Irene.
Shokuzenshu and small bites to - tide us over.

She smiles faintly at his compliment to her, deeply pleased but also wondering how much of that statement was a compliment for himself.]
Shokuzenshu. [She repeats the word carefully but clearly, finding the tone of each syllable.]
Is this an amuse-bouche, or an appetizer? And how many courses are we to expect?
Reply
Four. The main course consists of several dishes, however. It's best to take one's time.

Thank you. I wished to ensure that I committed no faux-pas, as well as pace myself properly.
[Speaking of faux-pas... She glanced down at the chopsticks with a purposefully placid expression. She'd been shown only once long ago how to use them - she wondered if she remembered.
Perhaps she would let Shiro start, and copy his hand position.]
Shall we begin?

[Even here, Shiro seems unruffled by Irene reading him like this, if anything there's a certain amount of gratitude, honest ease. It got him what he wanted {an answer, the truth}, and he doesn't often ask for more.]
Usually prefer to eat with my hands.
[But, despite his words, Shiro reaches for the hashi. There's no other explanation here; his movements are sure, even-paced, lacking any exaggeration care. For all anyone knows he could eat like this because of establishment, for all anyone knows he could do it for another reason entirely.]

Settling them in her hand she manages to open and close them, although somehow the movement is not the same as Shiro's.
She carefully takes a piece of something from the bowl (she has long since learned it's best not to ask what it is until after it's been tasted) and slowly but successfully raises it to her mouth.]
Delicious. However I can see why you might prefer eating with your hands. It will take a long time to finish a meal like this.

[There's a moment's wonder of how Kojiro might handle something like this; the officer was passionate, and direct, possessing little to no grace. Maybe he'd teach Irene over and over until she'd have perfected it, or he'd force himself to bear the situation with one of those uncomfortable looks he has mastered.
In any case, Shiro goes for another option entirely. A side-stepped truth:]
Is what I believed myself when I was taught the use of them. I came to it late and feeling starved, it seemed an annoying hassle to me.

[Which, at the rate Irene was going with the food, would be until new years. (Okay, maybe not that bad, but still.)
Looking around the restaurant appreciatively she commented,]
You are quite talented at setting a pleasant atmosphere.

[And that's a conspirational look right there, even as he's eating]
A bit too-- restricted, for my usual tastes. It's proven useful that I've been here before, as they're less likely to comment too much on my behaviour now. A good choice for a day such as this.

Yes, a day such as this lends itself to an air of formality. Although you pique my curiosity, dear, as to what behaviour would occasion comment.
