[HERPETOLOGY STORY TIME. Today, Rex is holding up a book, open to a picture of a rather unassuming rust-colored snake.]

Enhydris gyii, also known as the Kapuas Mud Snake, was once considered one of Borneo's 'best kept secrets'. I remember when news of its existence broke-- it was the first new snake discovered in, mm, about five years? The ( Read more... )

You are fascinated by the smallest things.

Why choose today for a lesson?

It's useful in my line of work.

There's nothing special about today. I was just bored.

That much fascination? I'm sure that it is.

This flood doesn't seem too exciting.

That's why I excelled where others merely made incremental steps.

I haven't even observed any effects yet. Have you?

[Capa hadn't really figured out the flood yet, but he was determined to do so. At least...once he was able to actually go out and be around people.

So the library would do for the moment. He had a book, but the nearest table was occupied. He walked over, hoping to take the other side, and saw who it was and what they were reading. Rex. Reading about particle accelerators. Capa felt a flash of disdain at that and shook his head.]

A bit outside your field, isn't it?

[DON'T YOU CHALLENGE HIS SCIENCE PEEN.]

Well, it won't be once I've completed my research.

[Well he suddenly didn't feel like asking. He just sat down.]

Oh? You expect to become an expert on that through books?

My knowledge of particle accelerators isn't limited to books. [I TOTES GOT MY SISTER TO MARRY A SCIENCE GUY WHO HAD HIS OWN PARTICLE ACCELERATION LAB, DICK.] They're just supplemental material.

[Wichita was determined to execute the idea of breannir. While she was sleeping away the majority of her week to avoid any emotional confrontations, she dreamed of food. Glorious, succulent, fabulous food. Specifically, breakfast for dinner. Breannir. It had been a favorite of hers back home, but she hadn't had a leisurely, zombie-free dinner since arriving in the Barge. Today was the day. Night. Dinner. YOU KNOW ( ... )

[Where was that beautiful narcissism coming from? Why, Rex of course! He wasn't a stress eater by habit-- actually, he wasn't much of an eater at all, but the Barge made it difficult for him to pursue his actual stress relief activities: brutal, invasive experimentation.

Or feeding his cobras.

But his three snakes had already eaten for the week, so he couldn't sacrifice small, furry animals to any reptiles today.

That left the most basic form of stress relief, the most primitive, the most... sad.

Food.

He was going to have him some cereal. Rex walked in, unaware of Wichita's presence even as he grabbed a bowl from the pantry, then a box of some kind of... space version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, both of which he nearly dropped when he saw, er. Her. Looking around the fridge. In short-shorts.

Ffffffuck.]

[Bravely attempting to ignore whoever was rummaging in the cupboard down the way from her, she began to concern herself with bacon making and egg cracking. The prep space had two small burners on which she had placed oiled pans.

Still, ignoring someone on the Barge was never advisable, especially if she was alone in the kitchen. Tucking the shirt above her gun so it showed was a good place to start, but as she did that, she glanced over to confirm who it was.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGGGGGGHHHH.

Suddenly, she had a faint dryness in her throat and began coughing in to her elbow. The eggs weren't done, but they'd have to do. The bacon was still clearly raw. Piling everything on to her plate, she began to feel double the apprehension, dropping a few things on the prep table. Concerning herself with an exit strategy, she began to comically look EVERYWHERE except where Rex was standing.]

[Um. Um. Um.

What to do. He was never in this position before. In fact, in his mind's eye, this scenario was always... entirely different, involving heartfelt reunions and making out, followed by some hearty laughter about how everybody else on the Barge was an idiot. But that was before his interim relationship with Iago sort of threw a wrench into things, and Rex was now, for the first time ever, faced with an ex.

An ex that he still had feelings for.]

Sorry! I didn't mean to-- uh... startle.

You don't have to-- I. Was just... gettingmilk!

[THIS WAS SO AWKWARD. Rex quickly rushed to the fridge and grabbed a carton of milk, haphazardly pouring it into his bowl-- damn, he forgot to put the cereal in first. He hated when he put the milk in first.]

So. [Totally cool. Totally calm and casual as he spilled some milk on the counter.] Are you... well?
