I submitted this ficlet (more or less - I've edited it slightly since then, mostly just to chop out needless adjectives) to a short story contest about a year ago. It ranked a 3.03 out of 5. One of the comments started with "Yuck!" and went on to denounce the characters as uninteresting and flat, the writing style being vague (over-reliance on pronoun use), and for ultimately being too self-flattering for its own good.
The other comments were significantly more positive, but as is the way of being judged, it's the ones that cut the worst that stick with you. I think I learned a good something about my writing from its reception from strangers.
I also learned that it's not very nice to include "Yuck!" in a critique.
