Pain killing technology comes in several types of pills, injections, and topical cremes, depending on the sort of pain, with more being developed all the time. The E.R. doc wrote me a script for some appropriate meds should I ever try to pass another stone, but he said they didn't see any more rocks in my kidneys so hopefully, after a visit with my regular doc this week, I can figure out a way to adjust my diet/etc to make sure none ever form, because to hell with going through that again, even with some pills.
