Heartbroken. Crying. As if I understood that just now.

I love my dog, but I know he's not perfect. So I sort of have a hard time believing anyone else will love him. I think that's why I'm upset about giving him up.

I left my cocker spaniel behind when I went to Poland in 1989. And even though I knew that it was temporary and that he was well taken care of, I missed him so much that I arranged to bring him with me when I stayed there a second year. And I have never been without at least one dog since then. I just cannot imagine a life without dogs in it.

You have to listen to your gut and let it tell you what you really want. Either way, you will be giving up something that is important to you, it's just a matter of what you can live with and what you can live without.

Good luck - I know it's a hard choice.

Thing is, I'll end up giving up the dog this time if I must, because it's the rational thing to do. A dog lives cirka 10 years, after all, and I have decades and decades of life ahead of me, the fate of which are being decided now. There will, after all, be other dogs. And I'll love them just as much. And so on, so forth.

I'll do it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
