Does your downloaded version mention latitude & longitude, or the "through the earth" part Stormfeather mentioned? The first version I downloaded from Proj. Gutenberg was based on the illustrated version, and it didn't. It seemed somewhat lacking in flavor (flavour?) compared to my memory, and so I checked again, and sure enough there are multiple versions out there.
And here's where the annotations also come in handy: providing the original stuff which was being parodied, since we've long forgotten the originals and only remembered Carroll's versions. The "How Doth the Little Crocodile" poem is taking after Against Idleness and Mischief," for example. I prefer Carroll's version.
Oh! I have read that! But I'm with you, I prefer this as well. It appeals to the macabre 12-yr-old in me.

I must have been lucky enough to miss the fall through the earth math.
