Parasha: Alice in Wonderland May 17th reading
You guys, you let me forget this yesterday!
Ah, the tea-party. I tend to think this is one of the most memorable scenes from the book/whatever film and tv adaptations are out there.
Hrm, well, it's a bit rude of Alice to go butting into a tea party uninvited, especially when they're trying to keep her off, even if the excuse of "no room" is so transparent. :p
And man, Alice is NOT the person to be telling people "it's very rude" after all the barging in, breaking and entering, eavesdropping, and conversational faux pas she's been performing so far in the book!
As a side note, I can't really decide if I like or dislike Alice in the books. It's just one of those weird things... on the one hand, she's an impertinent little girl, for the most part, but she also has her warmer moments, and some really bad moments where it's hard not to sympathize with her. But yeah, I don't tend to read (or re-read) the Alice books for love of the protagonist, I guess?
As might be expected, there's a looong footnote on the matter of the "raven and a writing desk" joke. Carroll apparently intended for it to have no answer, and after being asked about it for ages, came up with a "fairly appropriate" one: "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat, and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front." (Note nevar->raven) Other possible solutions that have been suggested by others which stand out: "Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes," "Because Poe wrote on both," "Because one has flapping fits and the other fitting flaps," "Because a writing-desk is a rest for pens and a raven is a pest for wrens." There are a lot of others listed, but I winnowed them down some. :p
Darnit, and I wanted to know what they do when they come back round to the beginning again. :p
Treacle = molasses, and apparently (according to the notes, I'm starting to feel like a parrot!) it originally referred to certain medicines for things like poisons and snakebites.
So much for "letting the dormouse go on for some time without interrupting"... it was like a whole line!
You'd think that Alice would at least be smart enough not to be rude to a Queen, who has already been mentioned to be quick about chopping people's heads off!
I don't know why Alice is suddenly worried about being beheaded, after already just brushing off one attempt at that!
