Parasha: Alice in Wonderland May 24th reading
Whee, time to finish up!
You know, I can't remember if I was confused by the "knaves" the first time I read the book or not. I first read it when I was younger, but I don't remember how young I was, or whether I knew that Knave = Jack.
"Some of them were animals, and some were birds." Huh, were "animals" just the non-bird-type-things back then?
Here's the full poem about the cards, which the White Rabbits reads the first few lines of. Although it gets separated into four separate sections for whatever reasons. Maybe because according to Wiki Pete, the last three sections are thought by some to be added later to an older poem.
I notice that the White Rabbit's a lot quicker to correct the King than he probably would be to contradict the Queen, for some odd reason!
Huh, and now the KING'S threatening to execute people. Maybe being around his wife is starting to have an effect on him?
Man, poor Bill. This is really not his day.
So, anyhow, yeah. It's All Just A Dream, if anyone didn't know that going in. Unlike the Wizard of Oz, where the dream ending was just tacked on for the movie version. Which is a bit of a let-down in a lot of books, but I guess to be expected in such a nonsensical tale.
And we have a bit of a longer ending than one might expect, with the sister sitting and thinking of Alice's dream, slotting the different things she "heard" in the dream in with the more realistic sources in the farmyard around them. I guess maybe that gives us a chance to get back to the real world, and put the dreamland in its proper place?
