Tsk tsk, you know what they say about eavesdroppers, Bilbo. They never hear good about themselves... well, I guess in this case he at least hears Gandalf standing up for him, but the rest of the dwarves aren't exactly kind to his memory.
Nice to get such a... humble image of Gandalf. Never minding to explain his own cleverness twice, indeed.
So if the back gate is always guarded, one wonders how the dwarves and Gandalf got out... with much bloodshed? If that's the case, why were the guard still there when Bilbo went through? Oh well... At least I can't really blame him for not telling them about the ring, after all that...
And that didn't really seem like about three days' worth of adventure! I guess they were really wandering for a long, long time!
And hrmph, I was going to complain about the whole "wolves hunting down humans (and humanoids)" thing. But I'd forgotten these were fantasy Wargs, not normal wolves. Just like the eagles are not exactly normal eagles.
And it's no wonder the animated versions of the books have so much music, what with all the songs even in the books themselves!
I'll admit, I always enjoyed the image of the eagles swooping down out of the skies to snatch the dwarves and company away from certain death!
