Something not quite rotten, nowhere near Kislev

So I managed to get my paws on the new Warhammer, within about an hour of reading the core book I was satisfied with the rules, enough to give it a play-test - eager I was to learn the way the system now works and of course if the Magic System actually works well enough.

Tabecland harbours the Great Forest, the river stir sits on the border of another few areas. This I decided would be the best place to start this little test, since the map I have of the Old World covers quite nicely the Tabecland area, so who did I have. Well only Hellion's character, an elven apprentice wizard.

So as per usual I had to make something out of nothing fast.

It was night and in the middle of winter, Hell's character was heading towards another small village by means of a coach, only the coach had now broken a wheel and was pretty much stranded - in a fit of pique two nobles that were with her decided to storm off into the ice and snow, not a clever move on their part.

This left her alone with a rather spooky coachman, who didn't really have an agenda at all. (Apart from to fix his coach and get out of the cold)

After some minor interaction between the coachman and the apprentice, the baying of wolves aside and the various spooky noises Hell's Perception check revealed the sound of a horse, clumping through the snow. Upon closer inspection, the rider appeared human and well clad against the elements.

After hailing the stranded travellers he introduced himself as Davian Torstaal and claimed to be an ex-roadwarden, now Captain of the local outriders of the area. He offered to help the Coachman and reported that things were worse than they thought, greenskins, foul and loathesome goblins had been preying on travellers in the area - driven southwards by the coldest winter yet.

Before the coachman could fully fix the wheel Hellion's PC heard a noise from the north, she went into the coach to investigate and another Perception test revealed the worst - four armed goblins had come seeking the obvious stranded coach, they had swords and two of them were armed with bows.

She warned the coachman and Davian -- a battle was surely in the offing?

As the combat began it became obvious to me that the re-write of Warhammer was indeed 'good stuff' as the apprentice sent her first spell at one of the goblins with the bows, causing severe damage and thanks to a lucky roll of 10 on her damage, and a successful WP test - Ulric's fury was invoked and the goblin was blown off his feet. One down.

The rest of the battle played out with the NPC managing to wound one goblin, miss the other. The coachman went to get his blunderbus and the goblins were unable to hit anyone.

Round 2: This combat round saw the true power of a Warhammer apprentice against goblins, as Hellion's PC unleashed two Magic Dart spells, ruining the other goblin's chances of ever using his short bow again - he eventually died as the second spell sent him into the long night. (Two down)

Davian's first blow missed, but Ulric was truly with them as his second blow invoked the god's fury and ruined the goblin's leg, causing it to scream and cry on the ground, with a 20% chance of death per round now...plus all crits were now to use the sudden death crit rules.

The coachman fired his blunderbus at the other standing goblin, hitting for a severe amount of damage, but not killing the creature. Its arm was numbed and it dropped the sword it was holding, plus it was stunned and now unable to act for 6 rounds.

Goblins go...with two dead, one fatally wounded and one stunned, they did nothing this round.

Round 3: Hell's spell blew the goblin's head off that the coachman attacked and that was the end of that goblin.

Davian put the writhing floored goblin out of his misery and the coachman reloaded his gun.

The rest of the time passed without event and they actually managed to fix the coach, Hell's PC went on with her journey and the Captain kept an eye on the coach, escorting it to the Black Dog Coaching Inn.

So there you have it, the first steps into a brave NEW Old World. The system is perfectly designed for the new player and GM, it works perfectly so far.

Only time will tell how well this lasts.
