I'm not so sure it's possible to find a translation free of any sort of bias, since translating is an inherently biased process. You might want to check out the Bible commentary written by Isaac Asimov. I haven't read it, but my father recommends it.
Your best bet as far as getting a good translation might be to get one of those parallel bibles, that has four different translations side-by-side. Those can be pretty interesting. I know my mother's bible when I was growing up used to have fun historital annotations/maps, but I don't remember what edition/translation it was.
I would also recommend a book called The Five Gospels, which is the four usual gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) and the gospel of Thomas, put together by a bunch of biblical scholars. The text is color-coded by "How likely is Jesus actually to have said this?" and it has fun annotations.
