Y'know, I seem to remember an incident from "a few years back" where the Hispanic, US-born mayor of a CA town (iirc) was accidentally "caught" when he went undercover to investigate a sweatshop and Immigration decided to hold a raid the same day. I don't think he had his wallet with him (or something of the sort) and he was very nearly deported because of it. I think one of his secretaries or aides had to vouch for him, and the news crews had a field day. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just an urban legend but I don't think so.

I'm not finding anything about that--I suspect it's an urban legend (which of course does no good to either side of the argument).

You've said it all wonderfully. I'm sorry you have to go through all that too. *hugs*

Ack know what I hate? When people squint at me and go "Wow, you're so articulate!" And if I say I can't speak Spanish, they get so PROUD of me. *flail*

My last Army assignment was as a Department of Defense courier, operating out of an air base in Northern California. All our work was done in pairs, and we were supposed to keep an eye on each other, to make sure nothing disappeared. (If something did turn up missing, we could look forward to a nice little chat with someone who caught spies for a living.) Who we would pair with was different on every mission, to make it less likely that two would both go bad at the same time.

The craziest individual I was ever paired with was a Navy Chief Petty Officer by the name of Gabriel. He was descended from Philippine immigrants, who had become US citizens through some program the Navy ran before World War I. Chief Gabriel was born in California, and liked being stationed in Europe too much; he never quite got used to the notion you can't drive on a US highway like it was the Autobahn ( ... )
