Summary: After 10 years Ohno and Nino have finally decided to follow their hearts, despite the consequences it might have.
AN: I wanted to write something with more of an Ohno slant - as a bit of a break from the longer stuff I'm writing at the moment - and I got the idea for this, so I went with it. It's fairly short and introspective, and not really how I intended it to be at all when I started writing, but I think I'm happy with it anyway :)

His fingers combed through Nino’s hair, a small smile on his face as an appreciative noise slipped past Nino’s lips - Ohno was sure that the other hadn’t meant to let it out, but he had, and Ohno found it strangely endearing.

They both lay on the small balcony of Nino’s apartment, on top five or so layers of blanket, Nino’s head rested on Ohno’s stomach as they looked up at the stars. It was a clear night, which meant it was perfect for stargazing, but it also meant that the night was a cold one.

The floor was hard against Ohno’s back - despite the numerous blankets - he was getting sleepy, and he was beginning to lose the feeling in both his fingers and toes, but he didn’t really mind. Being with Nino like that was so relaxing that Ohno never wanted the moment to end - certainly not for something as trivial as his body beginning to go numb.

It felt like it had taken so long for them to reach the point where they could be like that with each other. It had been a ten year battle, but somehow they had made it. It had been ten years of hidden feelings, worries about what everyone would say, warnings about what would happen to them if they gave in to what they wanted; ten years of longing for something more than the close friendship, of unrequited love.

That night they had given in. Ohno had knocked on Nino’s door, and Nino had let him in, and both of them had known that it was time to stop pretending there wasn’t anything there. They had stood there in Nino’s doorway for around ten minutes before either of them spoke, both of them just watching each other.
“I love you.” Ohno had finally said, and Nino had just looked at him for a few more moments before answering.
“Okay.”

Nino had reached out to take Ohno’s hand, and they’d stood there a little while longer, just taking in the entire situation. Ohno had committed the look in Nino’s eyes to memory, the feeling of the other’s hand in his, what time it was, the music that was playing softly in the background from Nino’s CD player; everything.

It wasn’t like holding Nino’s hand was something new to him, but it was so different to every other time. Somehow, in that moment, Ohno had known that they were going to be alright. After ten years of thinking about that decision, they had made the right one.

Ohno’s fingers continued their steady motion, sifting through Nino’s hair in small circles, and Nino’s eyes began to flicker shut as he battled against the sleep that was threatening them both. A cool gust of wind chilled them both; shivers running through their bodies, but neither of them had any intention of moving from where they were.

A bird effortlessly swooped across Ohno’s line of vision, and Ohno thought what it would be like if he and Nino could fly away; escape just for a little while. The next morning they would have work, and they would have to pretend things hadn’t changed between them, and Ohno thought that if they could fly away to somewhere else instead it would be nice - he didn’t like pretending.

“Oh-chan?” Nino’s voice was a gentle whisper as he gazed up at the stars, as though they held the answer to everything. “Is this really happening?”
“Yeah.” Ohno’s voice was just as quiet, and his eyes fell shut as he thought about what that meant for them.

It was happening. It wasn’t a dream, it wasn’t a fantasy; it was real.

Finally, when the air cooled further, they moved. Ohno smiled at Nino, and Nino smiled back as Ohno’s arms wrapped around him. They both melted into the embrace, and in that moment it felt to Ohno like they were in their own world, where they wouldn’t be judged, and they weren’t going to get hurt. Together they could be strong.

It occurred to Ohno that Nino hadn’t said it yet - not with words. His eyes had said everything, but a small part of Ohno wondered if it could be official when all Nino had said was ‘okay’.

Nino pulled away and moved over to the edge of the balcony, leaning against the railing. He clutched the cold metal tightly, knuckles turning white as he searched for the words he wanted to say. And then Ohno realised that he understood.

He knew that after such a long time, Nino wasn’t the type to settle for saying a simple ‘I love you’. Ten years brought so many different feelings, emotions and thoughts, and Nino was looking for a way to bring them all together. There were so many words to string together though, and no matter how hard he tried - and Nino was clearly trying - Ohno knew Nino wasn’t going to be able to do it right there and then.

Ohno’s hand came to rest on Nino’s cheek, and he leaned in, their lips brushing together gently at first, then harder. And that kiss said everything. Ohno held nothing back, and neither did Nino, and Ohno knew exactly what Nino had wanted to express.

The next day, Nino began to put the words together. He had arrived home from work in the evening, and Ohno had been sitting on his couch. Without a word Nino had fetched his notebook and guitar, and was pulling the guitar out of its worn case, his fingers sliding over the wood of the instrument for what felt like the first time in months.

Ohno had just sat and watched as Nino’s fingers danced over the frets, mapping out a new song. Nino’s pen scribbled hastily in the notebook as he penned the lyrics and melody, scruffy looking scribbles littering the page where phrases and chords had been changed slightly. Ohno would sing along sometimes, offering snippets of melodies and words.

It was completely their song, full of feelings, sentiments and their sense of shared happiness at having made it.

When the time for their tenth anniversary concerts came around Nino had said that he knew what he wanted to do for his solo. And when he walked out onto the stage on that first night holding his guitar, Ohno had only been able to smile. And when Nino had started to play everyone had been mesmerised. And by the time the song came to the end, unfallen tears shining in Nino's eyes, everyone understood that for whatever reason the song held great importance.

That night Nino and Ohno had gone stargazing on Nino’s balcony again. Nino had rested his head on Ohno’s stomach, and Ohno had run his fingers through Nino’s hair, and they had both sang together in perfect harmony.

And as they sang they knew that everything was alright.
