Another
stargateland challenge - this time, multi-media bingo. I filled my nine prompts with drabbles. Note: the fill for "PROMPT: Sweet" is written as an outtake from my story Sweets and Circles, so if it doesn't entirely make sense, that's why. All drabbles are G or PG. Enjoy!
PROMPT: Question
John sighed and shifted himself closer to Ronon. He rarely felt so contented, but after his long day, curling up in Ronon’s arms felt like a blessing. “Hey Ronon,” John murmured, “I have a question.”
“Yeah?” Ronon returned.
“Why do we always get attacked by the ones who look the most innocent and harmless?” John asked.
Ronon chuckled behind John and both of their bodies vibrated from the action. “I don’t know, babe,” Ronon replied. “But you know I’m always going to do my best to make sure they don’t actually hurt you.”
John smiled and nodded. “Yeah, I know.”
PROMPT: Smile
The mission that day had been fairly routine. They had negotiated a nice trade, some Athosian ale for some blackberry-like fruits. The team came back through the gate satisfied with their work and reported to Woolsey. Keller checked them over quickly and let them go, apparently content that they were safe enough and probably not wanting to listen to Rodney complain any longer about his hunger.
The team headed for the mess from the infirmary. As soon as they entered the hall, a huge smile broke out on Rodney’s face. He turned to the rest of his team and clapped his hands together. “They have the blue Jello,” he explained, and rushed to get some.
PROMPT: Night
It was always startling for John when he stepped through the gate from Atlantis, where it was mid-afternoon, to somewhere when it was night. He was night-blind for a few moments while his eyes adjusted to the change in light, and he never felt more vulnerable than during that time. Thus far, nothing significant had ever happened during those precious seconds, but John was convinced it was only a matter of time.
It turns out, as it seems only to do when what he’s expecting is negative, that he’s correct. This time, during the time between stepping through the gate and regaining his ability to see, John’s already under attack. He fights back as best he can without being able to see, until his eyes clear up and he freezes, then laughs. “Sorry, buddy,” John says. “I bumped into you and thought you were trying to kill me, I guess.”
Ronon laughs. “No problem.”
PROMPT: Outdoors
“The problem with the so-called great outdoors, well one of the problems anyway, there are several, but the problem is bugs. They’re terrible creatures on earth and they’re no better here in the Pegasus galaxy. In fact, I’m pretty sure they’re worse here, because on earth at least I know what sort of infectious diseases I’m in for. Here, here I really have no clue. I could get bitten by some mutant bug and be dead in minutes, seconds even.” Rodney waived his hands around as he spoke, as if that would more clearly communicate his point.
“Rodney, shut up, you’re fine. Also, here’s that thing that’s giving off the reading.” John pointed right ahead to a small statue, and Rodney seemingly forgot the bugs in his interest to discover what the statue might do.
PROMPT: Author's Choice - Training
John’s body slammed down into the mat, and he thanked the Ancients for what felt like the millionth time for padding the floor in this room. He groaned softly and got back up, preparing for the next attack headed his way.
Ronon stood across the room with a towel, which he brought over to John. “I think we’re done,” Ronon said. “You’re bleeding again, Keller’s going to kill me.”
“I’m fine, but alright, we can be done,” John conceded, knowing that only ice and rest could help his knee at this point. “Let’s go get a beer from my room. Forget Keller, it’s just a scratch.”
Ronon raised an eyebrow, but nodded. “Alright, buddy, whatever you say. Let’s go.”
PROMPT: Groovy
“What did you just say?” John asked, looking at Rodney with wide eyes.
“I said it’s groovy. You know, the music, it’s pretty… what?” Rodney asked, defensive.
“Groovy. McKay, you know that word hasn’t been used in, like, thirty years, right?”
“We’re in another galaxy. It hasn’t been used, like, ever here, John. I’m a trend setter.” Rodney smiled smugly, content with his reasoning.
“I think you’ve had too much of that ale, Rodney, because groovy is not ever going to make a comeback. Not even in another galaxy,” John replied. He laughed and rolled his eyes, then took another sip from his own bottle.
“Shut up,” Rodney grumbled, turning back to Teyla to continue his conversation with someone more worthy of his superior reasoning skills.
PROMPT: Family
They’re all squished together in John’s room again. It’s Friday and they’re not gating out tomorrow, so they decided to have movie night. John’s room is usually elected for this duty, since it’s the largest and closest to the Gate room should something go wrong.
John’s sitting on his bed, back against the headboard, Ronon to his left. Rodney’s in John’s chair and Teyla’s sprawled across the end of the bed, head resting on John’s legs. They’re watching Pirates of the Caribbean for the twenty-something-th time since movies don’t usually make the Deadalus’s restocking runs, but it’s hardly about the movie anyway, so that doesn’t really matter. John laughs at some joke Ronon tells and looks around. Even if this is the closest to a real family he ever gets, John thinks he’s pretty damn lucky.
PROMPT: Sweet
John’s dragging Ronon back over to the machines with the cloud-food. “I already tried this, John,” Ronon states. “Can’t we try something else?”
“No, no, you didn’t have this yet,” John insists. He turns from Ronon and speaks to the kid behind the machine, who gathers a cloud and hands it over. John presents it to Ronon, who raises an eyebrow. “It’s the blue cotton candy, it’s different,” John explains.
Ronon doesn’t really believe him. Other than color, the two candies look exactly the same. Still, he pulls a piece from the stick and puts it in his mouth. He waits a moment, but can’t taste a difference at all. “Nope,” he says, shrugging. “They’re both sweet. They taste the same.”
John laughs and shakes his head. “You’re crazy, they’re totally different. And blue is better, so give me that,” he says, grabbing the stick back. Ronon lets him have it, amused, and heads off to the next attraction.
PROMPT: Opposite
“What is this?” Rodney demanded, gesturing to his data pad a looking around his lab for the source of the errors he found there. “Somebody answer me. What is this and why?”
“Um, that’s the new program we’re working on Dr. McKay, sir, for the city’s shield. You said you wanted something to allow it to engage faster without using excess power?” Jacob Mentir answered tentatively.
“Yes, yes, I’m well aware of what this is supposed to be,” Rodney answered. “I asked what it actually is, because it most certainly will not engage the shield faster. In fact, this program will do the opposite of that, it will break the shield entirely. Do you want us all to die?” he demanded.
“No… no, sir. I just… I’m working on it. Right now. It’s a work in progress. I’m going to fix it,” Jacob responded, turning back to his desk.
“Right, sure. Zelenka,” Rodney called across the room, “make sure this kid doesn’t break the shield. I have to go gate out and I’d like Atlantis to actually be here when I come back.” Rodney finished, sighed in the general direction of the guy working on the shield, and went to meet his team in the Gate room.
