So I saw a flyer for this "author expo" that promised panels on self-publishing. Ok, I may want to go that route someday, might as well see the panels, might learn something, so I dragged Megan along and off we went ( Read more... )

I never even HEARD about this expo! (Which seems like probably a blessing in disguise.) But since I was just at a writer's conference a couple weeks ago, seems like someone should have mentioned it. What a shame.

I think self-publishing can still work. I think that self-publishing physical copy might be a bad idea, though. Digital (with digital expo) might work better. I read self-published stuff on Kindle quite frequently, since I'm perfectly OK paying $1-2 for something if the subject matter is interesting and the editing is decent.

How sad! I think self-publishing can be done very well (and successfully too!), but hawking your printed (ie, more expensive) books at an unknown "author expo" is not the way to go. Self pub really seems to be doing best with Amazon and other digital platforms.

But the real reason to self pub? Keeping control of and the rights to your work!

A good point! Lisa seems to be very happily self published, I've bought her books off amazon. But I think she just does it to do it and has a realistic view of how much money she's going to make. Also, she writes better than the this-is-my-first-fanfic kind of literary level that the self-pubs I's read are set at.
