The Cairo was helpless to interfere, and there were no other ships within range to interfere with us, as we quickly attached the Cairo's warp nacelles to Surak's Razor. The was made easier through the use of the grappler arms and overpowered tractor beams with which Surak's Razor was equipped -- Surak's Razor was also of a modular design, intended for the quick removal and replacement of parts (although I doubt if her creators had ever expected the small craft to have Excelsior-class nacelles grafted onto her).
The geraldine-rigged attachments could be expected to survive long enough to get us out of Sol System, at which point we would be able to spend more time on making the alterations more durable. I remained in my space suit (Lothar had no need of one) and transferred all available power from the environmental systems into the structural integrity fields.
We left the Cairo behind us. All of her vital systems were down, the ship had gone completely dark -- and yet, amidst the panicked distress calls eminating from her, we could ( ... )
