Totally didn't even realize that I haven't updated for three weeks. When not dealing with school, life or other sundry stresses, I've been avoiding 'em. Been a roller coaster and a half and I'm just exhausted. Finals are in two weeks, so all the end of term stuff is piling on now. (research work + school work+the term paper that I'm avoiding. Need ( Read more... )

*hugs* I'm sorry about all the stresses--it's that time of the year, although stresses seem to be there year-round without ever giving us a break. But the new TV is cool. :)

Hmm, my favorite generalization has temporarily escaped my mind at the moment, but most of the times, the ones that grate on my nerves the most are the race/ethnicity stereotyping ones--ones that lump people together, mostly because my family seem to voice them out loud quite a bit and I just want to tell them, "Not everybody is like that" but it's futile because they wouldn't listen to me and I'd just get even more frustrated. I know I'm not perfect, and I do believe in stereotypes somewhat, too, because there needs to exist the reasons for there to be the stereotypes to begin with, but when people repeatedly harp on people they don't know about just purely based on the stereotypes, I'd just want to bury my head under the blankets and get away from it all.

P.S. I'd love to send you a Christmas card. Is your address still the same as last year's?

The family (my Weasley's) I was by this weekend is a bit like that, but they're so used to me butting in that the father pre-empted me this weekend.

Yep, same address. I'll send one back, but I need you to tell me yours, unless it hasn't changed in far too many years.

My address still hasn't changed, since I forward my mails to my home address and pick them up later. I've sent it to you through email, though. :)

The one that pops into my head as pissing me off the most is when people assume lawyers are all rich or unscrupulous. A lot of lawyers go into public interest work, or just make a normal living. It's the minority that are super rich, and an even smaller minority that are "ethically challenged" but they probably get more attention.

'specially 'cause of all the jokes about 'em. People always forget that lawyers do a ton of really good things (like fight for their rights). I wanted to be one when I was younger, before I realized I'd be lousy at it.

Chana

I suppose that Women's Rights Movement had an important role in terms of upgrading the social recognition of Women's role in Society. Maybe sometimes there was some exaggerating... but well? It is well known that in order to make your voice be heard you have to cross some lines from time to time

These are my humble two cents :)

Hugs!

*shrugs* Of course there's some exaggeration ('cause there's always exaggeration when it comes to social movements), but that girl's statement was exaggeration in the opposite direction. She's right that in some ways the movement 'caused other social changes that created more problems for women-but many of those problems already existed, and the existing solutions were far worse than the ones the WRM brought about.

Honestly I can't seem to understand what's wrong in the Women's Right Movement. Didn't that ultimately lead to ratification of the 19th amendment? Also I suppose saying World War II had a greater factor in increasing women's roles in society because they were finally given a chance to try men's jobs.

Oh btw, besides Smith (all his classes are full) what's a good physics teacher? My sister's stuck to choose between Falk, Sarachik, Petricevic, and Fayyazuddin.

Thanks!!

Also, I hope you feel better!!

I think her argument is basically that the WRM led women's sexual liberation, which in turn 'caused a decline in values and led to a higher level of female objectification. It's not the worst, but a quick read through history would demolish it.

Even the physics department warns student's away from Falk, so anyone but him is a must. I haven't heard much about the other teachers, so for that, she may want to ask some of the people in her classes. Or drop into their lectures if she has time and see what they're like. She can also try to overtally into Smith, (some argument about the other times not working) 'specially since so many people drop.

Thanks, I'll take that into consider.

You don't have to answer if you don't have time/don't remember etc but if you can and it's quick for you, thank you so much!!

Consider the region R bounded on top by z=1-x and on the side by y=1-x^2 which lies in the first octant.

Find the volume of the region R. ( I know I have to triple integrate but I don't know what the interval limits or integrand should be. I need to know how to set up the integration.)

Thanks again!!

Yuck. Just a warning, I'm lousy at this kind of calculus, and haven't done it in years. You know x, y, and z, are greater than 0 'cause it's in the first octant. Your best bet is to sketch the object and work it out from there-you'll be able to see the points of intersection, which is how you get your range.

You can also leave z and y in terms of x and leave x as the last variable 'cause then you only need to work out numbers for the last one.

Since you'e not being given a value in the region, you're just taking the volume over teh region, so basically it's a triple integral over R - basically your integrand should be 1dydzdx unless I'm really mistaken. The trick to these questions is really figuring out the limits, 'cause they're what's gonna make it complicated.

two questions: got a review book and which textbook are you using? they may explain it better.
