liking pop. =/= missing brain cells

Instead of going off on a tangent at the places that sparked this rant, I'll do it here. Yet another "liking Naruto makes you an idiot" post, coupled with a whole bunch of "only idiots like HP" comments on slashdot.

So, liking HP/Naruto/Bleach/Avatar (those seem to be the usual suspects) does not make a person a moron; on the contrary it shows they ( Read more... )

but I still love the fight sequences
That's 'cause they are some of the best fight's in animation. (The animators used Samurai Champloo as a model.)
I agree with just about everything you said-so annoyed that this season's airing has been so haphazard that I haven't managed to catch any of it. Zuko's one of the best complicated characters I've seen in ages-a total screw up but I can't help hoping he'll change his tune. It's not only the main characters-the girl Zuko kisses in a side story is realized enough that I can get a sense of her characterization-that's how well done the development is.
So yeah, I totally agree with you.

And when they do air it-it's Friday/Saturday night when I have Shabbos and no reruns at times when I actually can watch it.

The ATLA voice casting is brilliant-actually in general I love stuff in English just 'cause I can here the age of the character better. (It's only by paying attention to English stuff that I've finally started to pay attention to Japanese voices.)

Personally though, I also love Avatar for the structure and theme-it's got it's four element/balance stuff down.

It's nice to see you post!

I saw OSK's "article" the other day. I was unimpressed. Particularly when he brought up homosexuality as if he some sort of hero when he is not at all for gay rights.

Anyway, I've fallen into the same trap but dismissing something solely due to popularity is pretty small-minded, however you want to work around it. It may be crap but it's not inherently so. I think the so-called high-brow people just get their rocks off by pretending the obtuse has more value.

And the Kristallnacht wank, I'm just surprised it had such a quick resolution.

I'm surprised it didn't land on fandom wank-though I guess that's 'cause neither side was particularly wanky. It was more outrage vs. insensitivity.

And the name got changed pretty quickly. At least it'd been changed by the time I saw the discussion at all.

When I presented on a bit of Sailor Moon to my seminar, they were really intrigued by the length of the storylines. So yeah, I agree: there's a lot of pop culture that gets dissed just because it's popular.

Everything Bad has a whole chapter on how multi-episode arcs actually enhance cognitive process by forcing the viewer to keep multiple events/characters in their head and call on them for each episode. (It was part of the argument for why soap's aren't horrid for people-plus they're always eager to throw in taboo topics that "tasteful lit" won't deal with.)

I totally agree with what you said. I was trying to get my brother into Bleach and my brother said, "It's too mainstream" but I said, "If it ( ... )
