kubuntu needs a sane grub

I'm not a hardcore techie, but giving Kubuntu (a version of linux) a chance 'cause we use it in my lab/ubuntu for IGVC/why not? Wouldn't mind it being the default my comp starts with except 1)my comp's the one hooked up to the printer and I can't get my linksys print server working-will do something one day, b)can't get the linux install playing ( Read more... )

Ahh, I've decided to just switch to Hardy-if I can get boot from usb working. Actually, now I'm thinking maybe I'll just burn a live cd on my mom's laptop and save myself the trouble.

I've not used Kubuntu specifically, but I'm super-impressed with Ubuntu. For the most part it works and seems to get better and better with each release. It's nice that there finally seems to be something close to a standard Linux to recommend to users, and I think Ubuntu will do most things the average user needs to do ( ... )

I like kubuntu for lots of things-was the first linux I ever really used-aside from playing around with some knoppix.

The harddrive thing may be due to the whole GB=1000 billion bytes problem. Harddrive manufactures ship out harddrives with metric labels, when they should be binary. I lost a ton of space on my 500GB drive that way (something like 30 gigs)-actually first got the explanation on a sugarquill thread. Dr. F's fabulous explanation

You can't rotate in acroread? That seems like an error on adobe's end, not unbuntus, but dunno-if the same thing happens in postscript and the others, then *shrugs* you could check if there's a bug report.

I just spent the entire morning creating a live usb so I could install kubuntu on my desktop to get windows back (had to be live usb 'cause my laptop doesn't have an optical drive-at least useful for when I finally install linux on it-and I forgot about using my mom's (my old) laptop). At least for some reason this time editing grub (menu.lst) actually did the trick.

I don't actually have that machine hooked up but I think more went missing than the 1000/1024 bytes issue. But maybe not. I don't have a monitor at the moment so I can't check.

And the pdf thing I think was a bug to do with CUPS which is, or at least was, some printing function. I don't really remember.

Glad you've figured out your issue, or at least it sounds like you have.
