Sometimes I like the firefox/bbc newsfeed, and sometimes it leads to much head banging as I see stories like this: Is that cellphone kosher?

So, stuff like no internet and no camera isn't remotely surprising, and as for the rest, uch but expected. The kosher symbol bothers me 'cause that's not what it's supposed to be for, but oh well it happens ( Read more... )

The area codes being important 5o matchmakers a scarily accurate example of how insane the marriage game has gotten in the more orthodox circles. If anyone wants a reason for the low marriage rates, just look at the laundry list of requirements and impossible filters.

That does seem like it would make things difficult. The thing that really struck me in the article, aside from the texts, is the phones that only call the other "right" phones. That would seem potentially inconvenient to me but obviously I'm not familiar with the culture.

The target audience for this phone seems to be people who don't have any reason to be calling people outside their circle.(Business men would be assumed to have a proper work phone, and most women in these cicles work in the circle as teachers/speech therapists/similar if they work at all.) Plus, the article said that it's also possible to get the phones and still be allowed to call anyone, it just costs more.

In America, most Orthodox Jewish communities have an ambulance corps (Hatzalah) and I figure Israel probably isn't too different-meaning that the emergency people would presumably have a number that's not blocked (assuming emergence numbers aren't blocked in the first place, which I doubt.)

That does seem like it would make things difficult. The rumors have gotten so insane about the Brooklyn, NY scene that you could make up totally contradicting nonsense (like "girl must be able to walk in 4 in. heels" and "no heels allowed, even ( ... )
