angst or fluff?

*shrugs* guess I'm in the mood for posting a lot lately or something, mostly 'cause facebook is an awful media for this kind of stuff. So I was reading fanficrants today and a poster was ranting about lousy reviews to her angst fic. What I found mystifying was that everyone seemed to agree that angst and fluff are two separate and distinct genres of fic, ( Read more... )

So you can have a fluffy or an angsty romance fic, but romance is the genre. In the same vein, it's totally possible to write a fluffy-angsty friendship one shot 'cause the genre is friendship fic.

I absolutely agree.

Oops! Forgot to say I also agree with this:

and nothing facilitates author laziness quite like extremes.

I'm much more prone to continue reading a fic that doesn't take the characters to extremes because I've generally found the overall quality of the writing to be better. I've back buttoned more often for OMG!EXTREME EMOTIONS than I have for anything else, I think.

Question: My sister is interested in an engineering degree. You're at City, right? How is the program there?

Yep, I'm at city. The program is serviceable, depends on what type of engineering she wants to go for. If she wants to stay in New York, it's by far the best value unless she can get into Cooper Union. (Columbia and NYU's undergrad programs don't have the most awesome reputations.) Tell her to email me/message me on facebook/etc. if she's got questions.
