Anything But Ordinary
Ronon watched Sheppard out of the corner of his eye. Something was definitely different about his leader, but Ronon couldn’t quite put his finger on it. First, there was their run that morning. Ronon usually left Sheppard in the metaphoric dust, but that morning Ronon could barely keep up. Then there was this, a training session where Ronon had his butt kicked in a way he hadn’t since he started military duty on his home planet. Finally, there was something about Sheppard, a smell, a posturing, that didn’t seem quite like the man that Ronon had come to know.
As if feeling it too, Sheppard looked at Ronon skeptically and asked, “Are you sure you’re not holding back?”
Ronon glared at him, attempting to catch his breath. This was definitely a first. He replied, “I don’t hold back.”
Sheppard smirked and chuckled, “Okay, that’s true, but...I guess those protein shakes really do work. I’ll have to thank Major Lorne for the supply.”
“Are you sure that’s all it is?” Ronon asked. He usually didn’t ask questions involving someone’s physical or emotional state. It complicated things, when life was already complicated enough. And he had never been one to get tangled up in relationships, especially over the past few years, because it would only end badly. He had grown used to being a loner, to counting on no one but himself, and definitely not worrying about others.
But the longer he found himself living on Atlantis and working with these people, Sheppard and Teyla (maybe even Rodney) especially, the more he felt himself losing the wall that kept others at bay. Like it or not, Ronon had begun to care about people again, some more than others. He wasn’t sure that was a good idea. He wanted to shrug the question off, go back to not worrying about the colonel and maybe kick his ass to proved that he could, but Sheppard’s “I don’t know” answer only created more questions and more worries.
Ronon relaxed his muscles and asked, “Do you think it’s related to the bite on your arm? The virus made Ellia stronger than any Wraith I’ve ever encountered before?”
Sheppard glanced at his arm, shrugged and said, “Why don’t we leave the worst case scenarios to the doctors and get back to our sparring?”
Ronon decided to squelch the questions he had and honored Sheppard’s wishes. He held up his hands and motioned for Sheppard to come at him. As Sheppard struck him with the first punch, Ronon put all his energy into knocking Sheppard on his ass. It would make him feel better if he could get Sheppard pinned. It would mean that things were still normal between the two of them, and that was something Ronon had come to cherish.
Years of running and never knowing what came next…it made the routine of Atlantis work for him. Sure, he was still adjusting, still trying to remember that people once again counted on him, but being able to expect what came next made things much easier.
And the fact that within seconds, Sheppard got the upperhand on Ronon, kicked out his legs, and knocked him to the ground...that wasn’t a typical occurrence on the land of the Ancestors. Ronon tried to get free, but Sheppard’s grip was strong and he had Ronon’s arms pinned over his head.
Sheppard’s eyes glimmered with energy and he was barely breaking a sweat as he said, “I wonder if this is what Spiderman felt like that morning.”
“What?” Ronon replied, though it came out as more of a groan than actual words.
Sheppard moved aside and sat down on the mats next to Ronon. He said, “Spiderman. He’s a superhero, my favorite one growing up. He was a normal guy who got bit by this special spider and woke up with all of his senses heightened and super strength.”
“How can you get superpowers from a spider? What kind of spider makes someone super strong?”
“It was a special spider, okay?” Sheppard replied. He didn’t say anything else, another unusual piece to an already crazy day, and helped Ronon back to his feet. After a few moments of silence, he asked, “Want to go another round or have I beaten the self-confidence right out of you?”
Ronon didn’t respond, simply took a swing at Sheppard. He managed to stay free of Sheppard’s grip for an extra minute or so this time around, but the final result was the same. He landed on the mats with a thud and groaned in pain.
When Ronon opened his eyes, Sheppard was on top of him and asked, “Are you okay? I didn’t mean to actually maim a member of my team. I prefer to keep them in one piece to protect my ass in the field.”
Ronon managed a nod. He glanced up at Sheppard’s worried gaze and felt relief course through him that he didn’t know he needed. The look on Sheppard’s face was normal, one that Ronon had seen many times, the one that made him the type of leader that Ronon would follow anywhere. Ronon pushed himself up as Sheppard slid over next to him, and said, “I’m fine.”
“Good.”
“Good,” Ronon repeated.
“I think I might need to check in with Dr. Beckett again.” Ronon nodded, unsure what else was expected of him. Sheppard patted his leg and said, “I don’t feel quite like myself. And I’m not just talking about the ability to finally kick your ass, but...” Ronon didn’t move as Sheppard’s hand moved up Ronon’s leg, over his chest, and back down to the other leg. Sheppard inched closer, but again, Ronon didn’t move as Sheppard’s body pressed against his and the colonel’s lips and teeth grabbed onto his own, biting down on Ronon’s bottom lip, his tongue sliding into Ronon’s mouth easily.
Ronon didn’t pull away, didn’t try to stop the situation. It was something he had wondered about too often to stop himself, even if this wasn’t exactly the man he knew. A small moan escaped from Ronon’s mouth as Sheppard slid on top of him - rubbing his body against Ronon’s achy one.
“I’ve wanted you since that first day,” Sheppard whispered into Ronon’s ear, biting down on the lobe and sucking on his neck. He pulled back and said, “I’ve wanted you every day since.”
Ronon pushed back, getting a hold of Sheppard’s shirt and ripping it off, before he managed to get control of the situation. Though he wasn’t going to say it, he had wanted this since the first day too, and he wanted it to last. He pinned Sheppard underneath him, allowing his hands to move down Sheppard’s body, revelling in the reactions it elicited. He slid Sheppard’s pants down and gripped Sheppard’s cock.
Sheppard didn’t remain still for long. He took back control of the situation, he grabbed Ronon’s shoulders and pulled him down against him. Sheppard’s hands moved underneath Ronon’s clothes until his clothes were gone and it was just the two of them, skin to skin, lying together on the cold mats.
Sheppard stopped, throwing Ronon off for a minute and making him wonder if this was another sign of whatever else was happening to the colonel. But after a few seconds, Sheppard replied, “This isn’t the virus talking, you know.”
“I know,” Ronon replied.
Sheppard’s hands traversed the length of Ronon and he added, “And I don’t want to you to feel like you have to-”
Ronon answered by pulling Sheppard back down against him and crushing his lips against Sheppard’s with a rough kiss. Words would never be his forte. He was a man of action, and Sheppard seemed to get the hint as his hands and body once again took over.
Afterward, Ronon wondered if maybe he should’ve stopped, if he should’ve waited until Sheppard was himself to see if he made a move like that again. But at the time, there were no clear thoughts in Ronon’s head except to enjoy the moment when it arose. He didn’t care that something might be wrong, that something was definitely different about Sheppard. Because it felt like Sheppard, and he tasted the way Ronon thought he would, and the release of finally doing something made all rational thought obsolete.
Sheppard glanced over at him and said, “I think I’m finally worn out.”
Ronon grinned and replied, “Good.” As he watched Sheppard get dressed and toss Ronon his clothes, Ronon decided that Sheppard was still the same man that he had taken hostage weeks ago. If the Wraith bite meant that Ronon was no longer the toughest guy, he could manage, so long as that expression on Sheppard’s face never changed.
