I predict that it won't be long (a year, maybe two) before you start exploring food preservation - home canning, drying, freezing - to make the bounty of the harvest months extend into the cold months. If/when you do, your local Extension office is a great resource.

The seasonality of food is one of the great disconnects today. But remnants of it are still around, especially when it comes to holiday traditions. Going back even further than pioneer days to medieval times, you can see that availablity of foods really drove these traditions. Forty days of fasting for Lent - spiritual observance, or a way to make food last through the final days of winter?

What a neat idea. I had not thought about Lent in that light, but it makes a lot of sense.

If I hadn't gotten distracted by pregnancy, my project two summers ago was going to be a homemade solar food dryer. I still have all the plans I downloaded from the internet. Someday!

Thanks! For me, they've become part of my enjoyment of our CSA - another way I savor the experience - and perhaps that enjoyment shows through.
