„Mommy, look, I caught a butterfly,“ the little girl screamed. She ran to the young woman who sat on the bench near the lake, with a smile on her face as she looked at her six year old daughter getting excited and proudly showing her the purple creature in her little palm.
„That’s great, honey,“ she encouraged her, making her daughter feel more proud and accomplished.
„Can we keep it? Pleaseee, mommy“, she pleaded.
The woman laughed as she slowly shooked her head. „No, we can’t. That butterfly needs to be free. You know, he probably has a mommy just like you. You wouldn’t want to be away from me, would you?“
The little girl slowly calculated her answer. You could almost see the wheels turning in her little sweet head. She gave one last defeated sigh before fully opening her palm and letting the butterfly fly away, free.
„I knew you would make the right choice,“ her mother said with an approving smile.
Her daughter smiled back; she had her mommy and that’s all that mattered.
„Let me tell you what,“ the woman started and got up from the bench, offering her hand for her daughter to take. „We’re gonna go and buy you a hot dog, and then head back home so I can tuck you in and read Snow White to you. How does that sound, Blair?”
Blair thought the idea was great so she nodded to her mother. Even though they’ve only been in the park for 30 minutes, Blair didn’t mind. She really just wanted to go here so she could caught a butterfly. Since that task was completed, Blair really didn’t mind where’d she go next. The butterfly… Blair turned around and saw a purple butterfly fly not too far from her. She gave him a smile and put her small hand in the air, waving to him. „Bye!“
Her mother looked to her, and when she found out who had she waved to, she smiled at the simpleness her daughter was. She was so careless. She didn’t worry about anything, and got excited and happy over the smallest things. As long as she had her mommy near, she was happy. Not even the fact that her father had leave even before her birth didn’t worry her. But it had certainly worry her mother. Mia sighed as she replayed the scene of that day in her head. It happened six years ago, but to Mia it seemed like it happened only yesterday.
“Look, honey, I made you some pancakes. Wanna try?” Benjamin said sweetly.
Mia sighed and dropped her head. “We need to talk, Benjamin.”
“Oh?” He inqiured, lifting his eyebrow.
“Yes… Benjamin, I’m -,” she started.
“Will you wait just a sec?” He stopped her. “Let me just grab a t-shirt, it’s freezin’ in here.”
Mia sighed. She needs to tell him a huge announcment and isn’t even sure how he’ll react and now he stopped her because of a t-shirt.
He returned a minute later, a dark blue graphic t-shirt covering his abs and tanned skin. She also noticed he wore Converse sneakers and jeans. She never could understand why he never dressed from his pajamas to everyday until it was ten or eleven A.M. It could do something with him sleeping ‘til nine, of course.
“Now, what were you saying?” He asked with a smile. At that moment Mia knew she’d missed those gorgeous dark brown eyes, messy blond hair with dark highlights, that sweet smile, almost perfect nose and strong chin…
She swallowed the huge lump in her throath and bit her lower lip. And then dropped the shell.
“Benjamin, I’m pregnant… with your child,” she breathed.
She saw the transformation on him that those six little words caused. His smile dissapeared. His eyes got wide, and he stood still and silent. Finally, he managed to whisper one little word. “What?”
“Well…” Mia swallowed. “It’s not like it was just once… I mean, we were together for a year… There was always a possiblity we could… conceieve…”
In a moment, Benjamin turned from a shocked person to an angry one. “But you were on the pills!”
“Of course,” Mia said quickly. “But nothing is 100% safe. Condoms, pills… They don’t always work their magic.”
“But that’s not possible,” Benjamin said, his tone getting higher and higher which each word. “You didn’t take the pills that night, didn’t you?! You wanted to hold me down with a baby, didn’t you?!”
“No!” Mia whispered in denial. She couldn’t believe what Benjamin was saying. She thought he loved her, she thought he would stick with her no matter what.
“Abort it,” Benjamin said slowly, with no emotions in his voice.
“What?” Mia was now having the same reaction on his words like Benjamin had on her’s just 5 minutes ago.
“We’re 20 years old, Mia. We’re in college. What kinda life can you give to this kid, huh? This child can only fuck up our lives. If the fact that I got a girl pregnant spreads around, my life will be over. My career will end before it even began! I’m gonna be a lawyer, Mia. My father was a lawyer. His father was a lawyer. Imagine my father’s reaction if I told him I’m dropping out of college so I can take care of a fucking kid! You don’t understand what I can lose if the passion of that one night comes to life. I’m telling you. Abort it. When we finish college, we can get married and have a kid then. Just not now. Come on, Mia. That thing isn’t even a human being.” Benjamin whispered.
Mia stood motionless for a few minutes. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. The man who she thought Benjamin was dissapeared in front of her. Poof. Gone. With that little speech, her Benjamin left her. And to even think she loved him and planned on getting married to him. The pain she felt at that moment was unbearable, much like one she felt when the news that her parents died in a fire hit her. The situation she found herself in was worse than any nightmare she could imagine. At that moment, Mia came to know three things. One; Benjamin was a selfish bastard who cared only about himself and his carrer and she was devastated that she didn’t come to know that earlier. Two; this baby was gonna come to life and it’s gonna have a good one. She’s gonna fight with all that’s in her to make this baby’s life good. Three; Benjamin would never set eyes on her again, and would never meet the baby. No. Benjamin Clark didn’t exist from that moment.
Mia turned and left without a word. She would start a new life. With her baby.
“Mommy,” Blair’s voice brought her back to reality. Mia shook her head and smiled sweetly at the little girl calling her. Blair, luckily, didn’t look a thing like him. She had ‘mommy’ written all over her. She had Mia’s pale skin, big emerald eyes surronded by long eyelashes and shoulder-length brunnete hair. Her little round face was sweet. Her nose was small, as all children’s nose is, and her lips were always made into a smile. Mia paid the hot dog and smiled at the way Blair enjoyed it. Yes. Mia Dawson was pretty happy. For now.
