Fandom: Naruto
Ratings: Up to PG-13
Spoilers: No recent spoilers. Mostly just stupid speculation on my part.
A/N: These don't really match the songs, but whatever, they were ~inspired~ by them. Also, this is probably part one of two, as I am determined to write 10 drabbles ... eventually ...
1. tenmon: kimi no koe | pg | yondaime-centric, naruto
It's not the thought of dying that makes Namikaze Minato scared. It's not pain or regret or even love. Sacrificing himself for his people is easy. He's that kind of man, the kind that is at peace when giving. He loves his village, the village he's loved his entire life. He might love his son even more. He's not perfect, of course, but most would agree that he's ridiculously damned close. If he were to go to heaven, he'd join those who'd left before him and wait for those left behind. If he were to go to hell, he wouldn't feel like the company was all that bad. They are all human, after all. He suspects he'd run into many familiar faces and a good number of friends.
No, it's eternity inside the Shinigami that scares him. It's the reality of no escape, not ever. The weight of what he would have to give up causes him to hesitate. He'd promised to be with Kushina forever, even when death parted them. He'd promised to the village that he'd protect them, no matter what. He'd promised to himself that he would be a good man.
He's not sure he can keep any of them.
Namikaze Minato's last act on earth is selfish. He adds the finishing touch to the seal on his son's belly. When his son died, when the Kyuubi finally died, they wouldn't go to heaven or hell either. The Shinigami would eat them, and Minato wouldn't be alone.
He doesn't do this in pain or regret or even love.
He does this in fear.
2. gregory and the hawk: the bolder thing to do | pg | one-sided shizune/tsunade
Shizune knows Tsunade better than anyone else. She'd bet her most precious thing on that.
Knows that she's strongest when buzzed, meanest when hung-over, most scared when she's sleeping. Knows that Tsunade deserves a more capable apprentice than her. Knows that Tsunade hates the people she loves best. Knows that Tsunade doesn't hate her. Knows how Tsunade looks without her Transformation Technique -- more beautiful that anything Shizune's ever seen in her life. Knows Tsunade's faults: alcohol, gambling, cowardice. Knows she'll never leave her side.
Shizune knows Tsunade better than anyone else. She'd bet her love on that.
3. kozue takada: himitsu kichi | pg | oc-centric, naruto/sakura
Haruno-Uzumaki Sasuke (Sakura had mentioned a desire to establish a Haruno clan, and Naruto adamantly agreed that their surnames should go alphabetically after several persuasive hints to the head) did not simply walk down the streets of Konoha. He glided. When Sasuke took a stroll, the crowds parted before him like a half-admiring, half-horrified sea before a pink-haired and orange-clad Moses.
Perhaps he was a bit of a loud-mouth, but his encouragement drowned out his complaints. Perhaps he was a bit mischievous, but he caused more laughter than anger. Perhaps he was a bit too color-clashing to look at without cringing, especially when he let his hips sway from side to side in a manner he seemed to think was alluring, but his father was Hokage-sama and his mother could punch them into four pieces only to put them back together and do it again. And perhaps he had a bizarre habit of making angsty, handsome clan heirs fall in love with him ...
But at the end of the day, Konoha loved him for the noisy, naughty, badly-dressed, yet blatantly homosexual shinobi that he was. He was theirs.
4. m.i.a.: paper planes | pg-13 | deidara-centric
Deidara does not come from a ninja family.
He never knew his father, and his mother starred in B-list movies before she became a fat alcoholic. She hates him as she hates her former self. Her son is younger, prettier, smarter and overflowing with potential. Deidara hates her for simpler reasons: booze in the fridge instead of dinner, her drunken, foul-breathed snores as she smears make-up and drool on the couch, walking to the academy and seeing five different guys she's screwed.
Deidara decides to become a ninja after watching a team dart through the trees effortlessly, because more than anything, he wants to fly away from it all. The land is disgusting. He wants to be purged of its dirtiness. He wants to look down on others as though they were ants, detached and clean.
The Tsuchikage has other ideas when he arranges for mouths to be grafted into Deidara's hands and chest. They are for making a special sort of clay, a medic nin explains. They are making him into a better weapon. They are for the sake of Iwa. They make Deidara's skin crawl. He hates the earthy taste that lingers.
He changes his mind when he learns how special the clay he makes can be. He molds a clay bird the size of his seven year old fist to give to his mother for her birthday.
When it flies into her face, Deidara can't stop laughing. The clay burns white-hot, and so does his mother, pure and beautiful for an instant before BANG.
5. evermore: relapse | pg | naruto/sasuke-ish
Sometime during the years that Naruto has been chasing Sasuke, his dream shifts and changes from bringing Sasuke back to holding Sasuke there. Konoha is not Sasuke's home anymore, though it will always be Naruto's. People belong nowhere but where they choose, and when he's honest with himself, Naruto knows that Sasuke didn't belong to him first, last, and probably not at all.
That doesn't stop him from chasing, from hoping, though. His pursuit makes him strong, just as Sasuke's pursuit of Itachi made him strong.
It's much later that Naruto understands, as Sasuke had, that he wasn't the one chasing at all.
