When did the word tourist become an insult?

Why is it when we see someone from out of town asking for directions to some interest point that we ourselves have long ignored, do we sneer and mutter "tourist" like they are somehow polluting our sacred ground?

No, nothing refrencing myself specifically. I was watching something on the Discovery channel and someone just kind of sneered "tourist" at someone else.

Just smacks of elitism. That always bothered me.
