I wouldn't exactly call it a hit job, though it is, so much as a classic example of local news reporting. "SOMETHING IN YOUR HOUSE COULD KILL YOU" followed by "THIS MAN SHOULD BE LOCKED UP AND ISN'T" followed by "HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS!"

That said, the guy truly does sound like an epic-level asshole.

Yes, seeing people you know on a local news segment is not usually a good sign.

It is always weird to see people you know on TV news. News is something that happens to other people.

While my connection was not as close, I did work at the ISM as an intern while I was in graduate school, and John was understood to be a rockstar of the museum set. He was a guest lecturer at a museum class so we could learn from his experience and be inspired by his example. Presumably, we are not all supposed to be defrauding our institutions. Yes, it is always weird to know that people you know are in situations like that.
