When I saw this illustration on the
storybookland community a few days ago, I thought that someone had discovered some artwork by the old master illustrators John Bauer or Kay Nielsen or Arthur Rackham.
Seeing such delicate, masterful linework combined with the astonishing use of color, some dreamily muted and others popping out in jewel-like tones had me convinced that I was looking at the work of a master artist who had decades of experience. Imagine my delight to discover that this was the work of a contemporary young (27 yr old) artist,
himmapaan Niroot Puttapipat. The illustrations are for the Folio Society's edition of Lang's Red Fairy Book. Niroot has also illustrated works by Jane Austen for the Folio Society (
see here for samples), and is now working on illustrations for a book of Russian fairtales and myths. I am so in love with these illustrations! The composition, the line work, the colors...everything is so delicate and perfect and true that it makes me happy just to look at them.
I've copied a few more of Niroot's illustrations in this post, but to see more (and larger) images, check out the original post
here in the Storybookland community, and also check out
Niroot's DeviantArt gallery here. If you check out the DeviantArt gallery, you can see pencilwork and some works in process in addition to the finished illustrations.
This is from a web-comic work-in-progress:
This is someone whose work I will definitely be following (and, I hope, collecting) in the years to come.
