Earthquake!

Aug 23, 2011 14:11

Unholy hell. We just had a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was about 80 miles from here. My entire house shook and stuff fell off shelves. I'm going to check the house for cracked windows and foundation problems.

This was felt all the way up to New York City.

Not fun. Not fun at all.

We felt it here in the mountains of NC.

It was a little weird; my desk trembled and I thought, yeah, that had to be an earthquake, even though I had no logical reason to assume we'd get an earthquake here in the mountains.

Then my twitter feed blew up, of course, so.

*hugs* Hope everyone's okay.

I'm okay. My cat is still freaked out. I'm not hearing any reports of serious injuries. The news is reporting structural damage around the area. The National Cathedral's central tower is now at a tilt and 3 of the 4 pinnacles have crumbled. That's too bad.

It seems like this was felt all over the coast. Crazy. And now it looks like Hurricane Irene may be headed this way, too. Yay! Not.

Oh fuck!!! Why do these things have to always come in bunches!!!! And we may have aftershocks to deal with too. And poor you with your leaky middle, you don't need to be shaken up like a fizzy drink!!!

Apparently, the rock mid-tectonic plate is more connected than the chopped up edges out west, so that our earthquakes on the east coast shake up things for more distances than the stronger west coasts one. Well, I guess that's fair at least. (-;

Big hugs. Never used to these damn things, but you're supposed to be tough and laugh as the earth rolls under you here in the West. I actually heard it's worse on the east coast because of the rock layer. Certainly because everyone is in relatively short distance to each other.

And don't you have a hurricane coming too?

Geez, life is sometimes one damn thing after another.

Yup. Hurricane Irene is headed this way. Looks like the current forecast is calling for it to head right up the Chesapeake Bay. If it does, it could be seriously messy around here.

If any crazy from the south says this is God's wrath for the East Coast, remind them that they've felt the brunt of tornadoes and droughts.

I am worried about Irene now that it has shifted its course. It's headed right for us now. The news is saying that we should expect hurricane force winds on the coast and tropical storm force winds in the Chesapeake Bay area. If it does continue to track in this direction, I could end up with tropical storm force winds here, lots of rain (of course), downed trees and lost power. We'll see. Perhaps it'll do us all a favor and go back out to sea before it gets to Maryland.
