Another Fine Mess
Methos pulled the collar of his coat tighter against the relentless cold wind that sent shivers coursing down his spine, and continued his angry trudge through the snow covered field. His eyes were fixed on the terrain ahead, patently ignoring the tall dark haired man striding beside him. He'd known Buck Wilmington for over a century, had been his first teacher, and usually enjoyed the man's company, but not today. Buck was a trouble magnet and, not for the first time, Methos wondered why he could not remember that until it was too late.
There was something about the former gunslinger's easy going personality that Methos could never resist. This time, what had started as a harmless visit to an old acquaintance with an amazing wine cellar and a penchant for extravagant parties, had ended with them both dead and stranded in an unidentified field somewhere in Spain.
His clothing was soaked through to his skin, but that was inevitable when one revived from a snowy grave after being dead for hours.
"You know I didn't mean for this to happen," Buck said.
Methos spared a withering glance at his companion, who at least had the good sense to look ashamed. Methos returned his attention to the hint of movement and sound off in the distance, which suggested that maybe there was a road not too far away. He immediately picked up his pace.
The other Immortal adjusted his gait to keep up. With Buck's longer stride there was no chance of Methos losing the man in the open terrain, but he was going to try nonetheless.
Buck reached out and grabbed Methos by the arm. "Come on, Ben, you can't still be mad."
Methos responded with a 'you must be kidding of course I'm still mad' glare before shaking off the contact and continuing his trek toward civilization.
"I didn't think he'd have us killed!" Buck said as he hastened to match Methos' stride. "I was just having a little harmless fun."
Methos whirled on his former student. "FUN! You seduced Count Castillo's wife! Did you think he was going to thank you for pointing out that the Countess is a bit of a slut?"
"She is, isn't she?" Buck chuckled.
Methos rolled his eyes and returned to his single-minded desire to get out of this field and away from Buck.
The Count was a well known crime lord, but he also knew how to throw a party. The fact that people who crossed Count Castillo tended to disappear wasn't something that concerned Methos, until today.
"Not like I had to work too hard. She could hardly wait to get 'ol Buck alone," he said.
Methos sighed, knowing there'd be no way to shut the man up now that he'd made the mistake of talking to him. "You are not royalty, Buck, it's time to stop referring to yourself in third person."
Buck didn’t acknowledge Methos' quip, too caught up in the memory of his conquest. "My animal magnetism gets them every time. They can't help themselves. And she was a real wild cat let me tell you. Bendy and - "
"Stop! Just stop," Methos pleaded as he halted in mid-stride to face his friend. "I really don't need to know the intimate details of your stupidity with Countess Ludmilla. We were guests at their estate. You should have behaved yourself."
"Hey, Luddy came to my room!" Buck insisted, still trying to maintain his innocence in the whole affair.
"Luddy?" Methos shook his head. "Will you never learn? You lost your mortality over a woman. How many more times will you die before you realize that women were not put on this earth simply to satisfy Buck Wilmington?"
Buck frowned, and Methos wondered if that was actually a new concept to him. "You sure?" Methos glared at the man before Buck broke out into a big smile. "I ain't stupid, Ben."
Methos raised an eyebrow silently asking Buck if he was sure about that.
"Look, women love me. Who am I to deny them the opportunity to have a slice of this?" Buck gestured elaborately to himself. "You need to lighten up, Ben. We're Immortal. It's not like we were really in any danger. And it was a hell of a party until… you know the Count kidnapped us, drove us to the middle of nowhere and shot us in the back of our heads."
"Only you could think that death was a slightly inconvenient end to a weekend of debauchery."
Buck just shrugged, a goofy grin on his face. "Not like it hasn't happened before."
"Well it doesn't happen to me!" Even though Buck was the one who had abused the Count's hospitality, Methos had been blamed for bringing him to the party and had been included in the Count's vengeance. "Next time, at least warn me that you’re going to do something this profoundly idiotic so I can get away without dying."
"Next time? See I knew you weren't really mad at me." Buck laughed, and giving a friendly smack to the shorter Immortal's shoulder, resumed walking across the field.
Methos hurried to match stride with Buck. "That's not what I meant at all. There will be no next time. In fact, I think it's about time we parted ways for a few decades…no, make that centuries."
Buck just snorted his disbelief at Methos' pronouncement. "Your life’ll be pretty boring without me around, and you know it."
"Boredom sounds fine just about now. I think it's time to find a nice quiet place to retreat from all of this." And you, he added silently.
It’s not that he didn't like Buck, but his former student did tend to bring out Methos' reckless side and he needed to regroup, get his edge back. He hadn't lived five millennia by being sentimental or careless.
"You in a monastery? Never happen."
"Who said anything about a monastery? I'm looking for quiet not comatose."
"Then where you gonna go? When Methos didn't answer, Buck continued, "You know, just in case I wanna drop by and say hi."
Methos hadn't given it much thought. Maybe academia. It was how he'd earned his medical degree and renewed it every so often. Then the solution hit him. "There's a historical society I've been meaning to check up on. I think now is the perfect time to apply for a position there."
"Sounds boring."
Buck seemed genuinely upset at the idea of abandoning their partnership. They had been keeping company for the better part of the last few decades, but it was time to go their separate ways before Methos felt the need to take Bucks' head himself just so he could have some peace and quiet.
Ingratiating himself into The Watchers was perfect. Besides, he liked to renew his acquaintance with the organization every now and then to make sure he was still an unknown quantity. There was no need to share the existence of The Watchers with Buck, so it made a great hiding place. And right, now hiding seemed to be the perfect solution.
"It's not. It's actually quite educational," Methos insisted despite the look of incredulity on Buck's face. "But I promise if I get bored, I'll know exactly where to find you."
Buck smiled. "Guess I can live without ya while ya get your fun mojo back."
"I'm fun."
Buck just laughed as he picked up his pace.
"I am! You said so yourself." Methos scrambled to keep up. "Admit it Buck, I'm fun."
"I'm sure you'll be the life of the party at that monastery."
"It’s not a monastery!"
"What ever you say, Ben."
"You are a real pain in the arse, you know that?"
"But you can't live without 'ol Buck for long and you know it. I'm just too much damn fun."
Methos sighed, knowing the other Immortal was right. Despite the cold, and the wet clothes, and the ridiculousness of their situation, and no matter how angry he was at his former student at this moment, he did enjoy the man's company. It was true that life was never boring when Buck was around.
