Getting There
Ellen and Joe were busy with customers, so Richie had reached across the bar to answer the phone. It was Bobby and he was looking for the Winchesters.
“Sorry Bobby, they’re out of town.” Richie explained as he settled back onto his bar stool.
“Hunting?”
“Uh, no actually vacation.” He admitted reluctantly.
“Vacation?” Bobby asked, incredulous. “That’s a new one.”
He didn’t think Bobby would appreciate that they’d given up hunting for a while to head to New York to find Sam a girlfriend. Richie hadn’t been interested in helping play cupid and had decided to stay behind. “Well, I didn’t get all the details,” he said evasively.
He could hear Bobby grumbling on the other end of the phone and was just glad he couldn’t decipher the exact words.
“You looking for some assistance on a hunt?” Richie prompted. With his graduation just passed, Richie was taking a well deserved break. On the other hand a hunt with Bobby might be good experience.
“Got some evidence of a vampire nest in Idaho. Thought the boys could go after it. Now, I’m going have to find someone else.” He continued to grumble.
“Wait, Bobby. I could help. I mean I know I’ve only been on a few hunts but I am Immortal and decapitation is kind of my thing, so…” he let his voice trail off. Maybe it was a dumb idea but he had to get out there sooner or later. Richie had spent last summer at Bobby’s learning how to shoot from Dean while Sam had educated him on the basics of the supernatural. Richie really thought he could hold his own, especially if he was backing up someone experienced like Bobby.
“Kid, that’s not a bad idea.” Bobby agreed. “I think you and me could handle this. I figure you Immortals can’t be turned, so you’d make great bait.”
Richie huffed a laugh, “Vampire bait.” He stopped because he didn’t want to say anything that might tip the balance against him. Though bait wasn’t exactly the role he’d hoped to play. He could almost hear Bobby thinking; weighing the pros and cons, Immortal back-up versus newbie hunter.
“Okay. I’ll meet you there.” Bobby decided finally and proceeded to give Richie directions to the hot spot in Idaho.
“I should be there tomorrow afternoon.” Richie said before he hung up the phone. He looked up to see Ellen and Joe watching him. He hadn’t noticed them listening to his half of the conversation.
“What?” he said a bit too defensively. “Bobby wanted some help with a nest of Vampires. I figured if Dean and Sam aren’t available, I can help out a friend.”
Joe just shook his head and deferred to Ellen. “What the hell are you thinking? Vampire bait? Bobby needs experienced back-up.” Ellen explained angrily. “This is just crazy.”
Richie could tell Ellen was gearing up for the long haul and he had no interest in arguing with her. On the other hand it was nice to have that mother figure who worried about him.
Instead, he smiled at her and she paused in her rant. “What are you smiling about?” She eyed him suspiciously.
“I’m just enjoying that you care so much Ellen.” He said as he leaned against the bar. “But I have been fighting for my life for over a decade and there’s a lot more danger in an Immortal challenge than I’ll ever face on any hunt. I think I can provide enough back-up for Bobby to clear out the nest and get him back safely.”
Ellen looked at Joe who shrugged. “You’re a big help.” She sighed. Turning back to Richie, she pointed a finger inches from his face, “Anything happens to Bobby and I’ll take your head myself.”
Richie listened to the stern tone in her voice and didn’t doubt for one second that she meant it. Joe began snickering.
“What?” Richie demanded. “I thought you were staying out of this.”
“Oh, I am. I’m just wondering how you’re gonna get there.” Joe said innocently and then Ellen began laughing too.
“Aw crap.” Richie muttered.
A week ago he’d been involved in a hit and run. He’d been run off the road by a crazy driver and while he’d walked away - well, once he revived, he’d walked away - his bike had not been so lucky. Dean had been helping him put it back together but he’d headed to New York before the job was done. Damn, Dean. It’s not that he couldn’t fix it himself but it went a lot faster with help.
“There’s no way I can get her road worthy in time to meet Bobby.” Richie admitted.
Ellen seemed pleased. “Guess you’ll have to call and cancel. Unless you want to take the bus all the way to Idaho.”
“The bus?” Richie sighed. Not exactly the way he’d pictured arriving for the hunt.
Joe looked at him sympathetically and handed him a consolatory beer. “I think Ellen wins again.”
Richie looked from Joe to Ellen and smiled. “Not necessarily. Mom, Dad, can I borrow the car?”
