Someone very high up in the company intervened when my friend put in his two weeks. It took me by surprise due to the fact that he was almost as low-level as I am. This exec had him apply to something, [probably] instructed the hiring manager to pick him, and authorized HR to pay whatever he asked for. He's still leaving our group for greener

Not ungrateful if you know for a fact that those other people make so much more [relatively or otherwise]. Especially when you know the value that you bring to the company. Those things are facts, not emotional things, and it is hard to argue with facts. You are mostly negotiating against HR, not your managers.
