There's a dog next door to where Dan lives (actually, there are like a billion... huge dog community) and the people don't walk the dog ever. They just put it outside for HOURS and the thing barks endlessly, so if you want to sleep in on weekends, you get to hear it bark and bark to be let in. What really gets me is that if they just walk down the street, there is a giant dog beach (he lives a 5 minute walk from Lake Ontario) and the dog can just run around with other dogs and be happy. But no, even on gorgeous days, they just let the damn thing bark and bark and bark.

Good for you for doing something wonderful for that little dog. If it happens again, maybe check with your local humane society and see if they charge for drop off of strays? Ours charges for surrenders, but not for strays. They only hold strays for 5 days, but you can give them info to be notified as Interested Party after the 5 days are up if you have any interest in keeping the dog if no one claims it, or just finding out what happens to it.
