Facebook page for Larsdatter.com

I've set up a Facebook page for Larsdatter.com -- it'll have information about new & updated pages, and people can use it to post questions, comments, and suggestions.

I am curious what that does for you or your readers. I am not trying to be difficult, but trying to understand. People have been suggesting a Facebook page for La Belle Compagnie (labelle.org), and my gut response has been, they already have one - on the public website. What advantages does having a facebook page offer you?

I can see where it benefits Facebook, Incorporated very much (additional content that makes people want to use their service more). So what is in it for you?

I have some of the same argument with LiveJournal, but that is mitigated by the fact that I can make my LJ page publicly visible to any web user (they do NOT have to be on LJ to read the public LJ content, only to comment meaningfully).

Has Facebook opened that up in a way that is useful to casual web browsing?

Or are nearly ALL of your readers on Facebook anyway (which would make this whole line of discussion moot)?

I am seriously trying to understand all arguments so we know what to do with La Belle website and pages.

Thank you.

Well, here's the thing. Larsdatter.com doesn't really have much of an interactive area. There's a blog, but a lot of that is talking about museum exhibits and other things of interest that are really outside of the website. Other than the blog, people really have to scramble to figure out how to say "yo, strawberrykaren, everything on the Koninklijke Bibliotheek website has moved, so fix EVERY PAGE, mm-kay?"
Plus, it gives me a way to communicate these updates not just to the people who've checked in as fans -- if you go to the homepages for the Medieval/Renaissance or 18th century sections of the site, you'll see that I've added a "Find Us On Facebook" box to each page, which also provides the same updates that I'm posting on the Facebook page, and presumably will also show future discussions and so on.
It's probably driving some traffic to Facebook, but I'm hoping that it'll drive more traffic to the linkspages, and maybe even get people looking at content they'll find useful but didn't know was even there.
Since opening the page a bit less than 12 ( ... )

Oh - my, very good points and potentially really useful.

We don't have an Amazon Affiliation because we are pretty strict about the non-profit status, but it looks like that can be worked with.

Some more interactivity is desired, but within limits; and our site is way overdue a complete redesign (a lot of work has been done on a private wiki open to members only - but we have not reached consensus on how changes will get published once we agree a page should be published).

Thank you very much, you've given me lots to think about and discuss with the other members of La Belle.
