My name is Louise Sheard and I’m about to turn 21 on the 30th of May. I would describe myself as creative, independent, attentive and optimistic; I really put all my effort into getting the best out of any situation I find myself in.

Textile’s has always been my passion, since weaving chunky wool onto cardboard squares in primary school. Throughout high school I spent the majority of breaks, dinner breaks and after school time in our textiles room. If I wasn’t finishing projects I was using the sewing machines, drawing designs or listening to my tutor talk about her work.  After completing my GCSE’s I was thrilled to be offered places at all three colleges I had applied to and accepted a place at Wheelwright school of art and design as it has the best reputation. Unfortunately after the first term, money became a problem and I had to leave. Determined not to give up I called my second college choice, Huddersfield Technical College and asked if I could complete the course with them as this was walking distance from my house and I wasn’t required to buy any materials upfront, but only as I needed them.  I studied print making, life drawing, art history, fashion design, graphics, multi-media textiles and photography.  All of these subjects have always interested me and contributed well to my projects but there is nothing I enjoy more than textiles, it has my heart, my spare time and all of my attention. I find it therapeutic but at the same time exciting. I love to work alone but also include other people in my work, whether it’s asking for advice, for opinions or combining my work with other peoples work. I become a bit of a perfectionist with projects but also like to make a visually pleasing mess.

I love to collect and compile images from different media, buttons and beads, little whimsical toys and other findings. I love to gather and stockpile cute fabrics, prints and ribbons and put them all together into sketchbooks. I love adding notes to images and writing down every thought I have about colour, pattern, texture and suitability’s, combining all of these together to create books full of something fresh and new to inspire my way through designs and finished products. I remember when I was younger; I used to collect sweets and sort them into colours or patterns and decide which ones looked the best together. They would sit on my shelf and never get eaten, like little pieces of art. My mind has carried on working this way and I intend to create a career and future from it. Both at college and at home I have completed projects with children’s clothing, home décor, canvas art accessories and more.

I put together a portfolio of work and took this to an interview at Loughborough University in 2007 and was offered a place. I made the hardest decision of my life soon after and decided to turn down the offer as I was due a little girl at the end of February. Loughborough is a long way from where I live and I needed to be with my family and friends through this experience. It has always been my intention to return to university and after spending the first two years of my daughter’s life experiencing her first smiles, words, steps and dance lessons! I can confidently say that I am ready to make this huge change and return to education. Since attending the open day in 2007, I’m certain that Loughborough is perfect for this stage of my life. It is everything I am as a person, portrayed in the building, the people and the work produced. I’d like this experience to inspire me and help me develop old techniques and skills into something personalised and professional as well as teaching me new skills that will make a perfect team with my love for textiles. Textile’s is my life.

Thank you x
