SUCH a fun day!

I went to Cannon Beach today with Lindsay, Krista and Bryn (purplephlox). I hadn't been to the beaches around here before, and Lindsay had told me that it was a crime. Now, I'm not much of a person for beaches, and I don't know why. I don't like having sand in all of my bodily orifices...well, that's a good enough reason, I think.

Anyway, we set off from McMinnville at about noon, off to Cannon Beach. We talked about some really morbid things on the way there (haunted houses, ghosts, murder, suicide, kill or be killed), but it was really amusing, too. We're planning on finding this haunted house thing in Newberg and checking it out. Well, Bryn's not much for scary, so she didn't really want to go to the haunted house.

We were on the highway, headed for Cannon Beach, and we merged onto another highway, where traffic promptly stopped. Krista and I were playing with pretzel sticks, putting them in our mouths and making it look like we had walrus teeth, and suddenly she turned around to face the car behind us. Apparently, the guy in the car was REALLY attractive, and now he was busting up laughing at her. So we did it again, but this time both Krista and I looked at him with walrus teeth. We were trying to get him to laugh at us again, and he kept laughing. So, we had the brilliant idea of making a sign on the back of one of our paper plates that we'd brought. It said "Honk if you think we're HOT" on it. Bryn held it up to the back window, and he didn't honk! We decided that he hadn't seen it, or that he was a "Safety Sam" and didn't want to take his hands off the wheel. Just in case. So, the rest of the day, we were calling people Safety Sam.

After Safety Sam, we got to Cannon Beach pretty quickly. We parked, and had lunch at a restaurant called Mo's; they have GREAT clam chowder. God, I love clam chowder. (But I always think of that episode of the Simpsons... "Say chowda, Frenchy!" "Chow-dair.") We had a lovely view of the beach, too. We were looking right over the water from where we were sitting on the patio outside. It was great.

After we ate, we just started wandering down the beach to see what was out there. We were going to rent Fun Cycles, which are those trikes with the hammock-y seats...but the place from which we were going to rent them was abandoned, though the door was unlocked and the lights were on. These people were lucky that we were so honest! ;) We wandered around downtown for a little bit, and got some taffy (VERY yummy) as well as ice cream. We walked back down to the beach, where Lindsay's car was parked, and we headed into Seaside, where we were going to get a crab and then eat it on the beach.

Unfortunately, the crab place was closed at 7:00 on a Sunday evening (argh), so we just went to Safeway and got some bread and cheese. We also picked up stuff for s'mores, and stuff with which to make a campfire. We got back down to the beach and were looking for a spot, when an older couple called out to us, "We're leaving!" So, we got their spot AND their fire for free. We had to continue tending the fire, but since it was already started, that was no problem. :)

Making s'mores and being stupid around the fire was SO much fun. We had to lengthen the bamboo skewers that we'd gotten for our s'more sticks, because they were too short and our hands kept getting burnt from the heat of the fire, so we rubberbanded them to sticks of firewood by using hair ties, and then held the sticks of firewood with the attached bamboo skewers into the fire. Much easier!

After a few s'mores, Bryn and I decided that we wanted to walk out to the water. The tide was WAAAAYYYYY out, so we walked FOREVER until we reached water. We walked up until the water was above our ankles, and then we were hit with a huge wave, which was fun. So, we walked back in a little bit, rolled our pant legs up a little more, and then went back out. We got hit with a larger wave, soaking me up to my knees and Bryn a little higher, I think, because she's shorter than I am. Oh, I forgot to mention, it was totally dark outside, so we were using the fluorescent green light of my cell phone to guide us around. It was a great look: two girls with their pants rolled up past their knees, carrying a cell phone but pointing it down at the ground, and running around and screaming. I taught Bryn the Amsterdam song, too. It was great.

On the way home, Bryn and Krista seemed to be falling asleep, but Lindsay and I were getting silly. We were singing Elton John, and just generally being stupid. Also, we were wondering, why did the Barenaked Ladies call themselves the Barenaked Ladies? They're not barenaked, nor are they ladies. However, we thought it might be because they like barenaked ladies. My natural progression from that was, "Well, if I were to name a band after something I liked, it would be called Josh Groban. No! Wait! I would be L-L-L-Lauren and the Josh" (after Elton John's song "B-B-B-Benny and the Jets). Oh, I was so amused. :)

Anyway, I'm REALLY tired, but I took a bunch of pictures, so hopefully I'll be able to scan them in soon. I used a disposable camera I'd found on the ground at camp; I had also taken a good deal of camp pictures with it. I'm taking it to be developed tomorrow. :)
