Truth be told, I don't self-identify as a Republican, either. In fact, I don't really have a political ideology at the moment.
But!
I dunno. Sounds like a good plan, but it's just a lot of words.

"I believe that it is time that America as a whole UNITES and finds the common ground which can bring us together." The citizens of this lovely country are never going to have some magical "unified dream"; thus it will be impossible for a leader to help us find such unity. Sure, there are some leaders who are more moderate than others, and these are probably the best ones since the majority of the people are at the least not repulsed by their ideas; but still. There is no way to make everyone happy or even tolerant of the elected leader.
My guess is that everyone who is part of this "Unity08" thing will end up voting along party lines again, since the candidate of their original party will best suit their idea of what America's unifying vision should be.

I for instance believe in a balanced budget. Typically a conservative idea. I believe in more liberal social policy. That makes me a moderate. With a Democratic leaning clearly but still a Democrat.
The thing is the issues of the day need some compromise, until we have a leader who represents a voice of compromise they will not be solved. With the current nominating systems (aka primaries and caucuses) only the party faithful tend to vote. This has led to the most extreme nominations possible.
The reason we need Unity08 is not necessarily because they will be elected, it is because they will force the major parties to moderate their views. I stress that Unity08 is not a permanent party, hence the 08, it is a movement to the center.
