[Background] Gavroche was born the middle child of the Thénardiers. He had two older sisters and two younger brothers. He wasn’t loved though and was thrown out to fend for himself at a very young age. He was three when Cosette was being cared for by his parents. At that time he spent much of his time crying in hunger because his mother didn’t want to feed him. She was bored with him and ignored repeated suggestions from her husband to feed the child.

After being thrown out onto the streets, strangers clothed him. And it was the streets where he lived. This wasn’t a problem for him though. On the streets he was free to do as he pleased and it was certainly more pleasant than being around his family. He had nothing at all but he could get anything he wanted. He named himself Gavroche (it wasn’t clear if he ever had a name before this one.) This life never bothered him though because here he was happy. And, it wasn’t as if he ever got the chance to know what a mother and father were actually supposed to be like.

When he was around 12 years old, he came across his two younger brothers. It’s purely by chance and he had them come and live with him in the hollow cavity of an elephant statue. Their parents had sold them off to a woman so they wouldn’t have to keep them. The next morning they left.

Later, he came across one of his father’s men who brought him to the prison where his father and two others were being kept. He was told to climb up the wall and deliver a rope to the other side. He did so then left. Thénardier had no idea that it was his son who ended up helping him.

Gavroche appeared again when he joined the ABC students at the barricade with a hammerless pistol. He asks for a musket but was told that the men will receive them first and the children later. Instead, he was given the job of rushing about to ensure that the students knew what was going on outside of the barricade. During this time, Javert arrived among the men but Gavroche didn’t notice him right away. When he did, he was amazed and warned Enjolras that Javert was a spy. Javert was captured right away and tied up.

Marius sent Gavroche with a letter for Cosette. Rather than her, he came across Valjean who told him that he was there to deliver the note the rest of the way to her. He paid the boy money for the note and then had him go on his way. Running back to the barricade, he reported to the students that he was barely able to get through because the place was surrounded. The fighting continued and soon the students were running out of bullets. There were none to be found and they needed the ammo in order to continue. However, to get more would be a suicide mission.

It was this little one who climbed the barricade and put the ammo into a basket he carried. The enemy fired at him but miraculously, they missed him. Taunting them and singing, he continued to gather up the needed bullets for the students. He gave them what they needed and kept going. Time and time again the bullets missed him. But then, one finally struck. He fell and those of the barricade cried out in horror. He didn’t stay down though.

Sitting up, he lifted his arms towards the man who had shot him and sang again. The man shot him once more and killed the boy.

[Personality] Most people who live on the streets are hard. They live in the worst places and are often starving and cold. Gavroche might be someone who lives on the streets but he is anything but hard. That’s not to say he isn’t at all, of course. But for the most part, he sees the joy of life in everything he does. Much of the time one can find him singing, humming, or whistling as he goes about life. He is young still and full of energy. But only when he is living on the streets. That’s where he’s happiest because there he’s free.

Despite a lack of education, he is by no means stupid. He’s very clever and street smart. He’s made his way on his own and knows how to survive. This means he’s not above stealing or accepting charity. Just so long as no one thinks he’s incapable of taking care of himself. Or of being useful. That aggravates him completely.

He is lighthearted and can be very focused on a task appointed to him. Since he’s still a child, he runs all over the place still and can miss something in a moment when he’s excited. But beware when he calms down again. He pays attention to things and knows his way about and the people that are about. Usually this means that he can avoid getting into trouble even when he is getting in trouble. He is a mischievous little devil.

And he can be rather cheeky and boisterous. During the scene where he’s killed, he mocks the soldiers shooting at him for missing him so many times. Even after the first bullet hits him, he keeps going. Or when he’s told that he’s just a child he tells the men that “A child like me is a man and men like you are children.” Or after Javert was revealed to be a spy by him he just smiled at him and said “The mouse has caught the cat.”

He is described as being a child that has within him a shadow and a dream. The darkness comes from all he’s seen on the streets. The streets of France in those days are the very pits of hell and he’s one of the little devils that have mastered them. However, there is light that comes from the joy he still finds in life. Perhaps there is no good left in the world but that won’t kill the smile that Gavroche wears. He’s too happy, too filled with shear joy of life to let himself be brought down by anything at all.

Just don’t consider him worthless or take him from his kingdom of trash.

[Specialties/Abilities] He is a normal human being so he has no great superhuman power and he’s also uneducated due to living on the streets. But that doesn’t mean he’s helpless. Anything but that. He’s lived on the streets most of his life so he knows his way around. Cunning, clever, and street-smart are great ways of describing him. It’s a hard life living on the streets but he’s adjusted well. He’s quick on his feet and knows how not to get caught. It’s easy for him to pickpocket to survive. He’s also been shown to be very good at climbing and getting in and out of tight places.

Since he’s been on the streets for so long, that’s where his home is. He will take the charities of food, money, and clothes but he doesn’t want a place to live. Because he already has a place.

Don’t underestimate him just because he’s small. There is plenty that a little person can do and he’ll show you. And he knows things just by being around. He can take care of himself and he’s proven that just fine, thank you.

[Affection] He’s a very friendly young boy but not really affectionate. If someone were to offer him hugs or kisses he’d more than likely be weirded out because he doesn’t understand that kind of thing having not had experience with it.

[Fighting] Oh he would love to join in the fight! However, he’s 100% human and a child. Though quick on his feet he can be injured or killed. He did arrive here dead, after all.

[Other Permissions] Gavroche’s mind would be an open book since he hasn’t experienced telepathy or superhuman powers before. However, ask me before proceeding with anything like that.

[Other Facts] Gavroche is a street urchin. That means that despite his young age, he’s seen enough to have matured him early in life. He knows all about the ugly things in life and has probably seen more than his fair share in his time. That said, he is rather happy-go-lucky when it comes to attitude. He has fun in any situation. The book describes him as doing everything gaily. His greatest irritation though is being underestimated just because he’s small. Perhaps one of the greatest examples of this comes from the musical in the song Little People. And by living on the streets, he’s actually aware of what is going on in the world. Don’t have him adopted and living with another person though. It’s more than likely that he’ll run away and be a bare-footed urchin once again. The streets are where he’s happy and that’s all he wants.
