I'm easily distracted, so I'm looking for some ambient-ish music to play when I read. The only instrumental stuff I have is Godspeed You Black Emperor and their sister bands, which is all too bombastic and powerful to ignore. I'm looking for something atmospheric and pretty. I'd download some old bebop jazz, but the idea of listening to jazz while ( Read more... )

Atmospheric and ambientish, hm? How about Brian Eno -- if his Ambient albums and Discreet Music are too spare for you, try Another Day On Earth. I'm also digging Colleen's new one, Les Ondes Silencieuses and The Field's From Here We Go Sublime. And Lou Reed just did an ambient album, which is worth listening to just 'cause... well it's Lou Reed doing ambient, man. And PJ Harvey's new one isn't Ambient by any stretch, but it might be the sort of atmospheric you're looking for maybe. It's damn good anyway.

I want to say early(ier) Aphex Twin, but it has been about a decade since I sat down and really listened.
I've always been a big fan of Air... but they might be too much for background music... though I've always considered them my "naptime" music. I used to paint while listening to DJ Spooky. I can't focus on his music because there isn't much for me to latch onto. Maybe it will work for you.
And, then of course there are some old favorites from my Goth days: Delerium, Enigma, and Falling You. Some of it is sort of new agey... but at least it isn't jazz (which, ps, I listen to Billie Holiday while reading. Nothing wrong with that)
And last but most certainly not least are the Guild of Funerary Violinists who make LOVELY music, though it is, not shockingly, somewhat depressing. You can get a feel for them here: http://www.myspace.com/guildoffuneraryviolinists

They're a bit GSYBE, but not quite as bombastic.
