I'm bored. And lazy. My SO has been home for the past week (holidays) and it doesn't agree with me. I get nothing done when he's around. He's gonna be here another week. I don't expect to become more productive anytime soon. *sigh*
So, I made a new HCL icon to cheer me up. It turns out it just left me more depressed. As always, I'm not happy with it. Whatever.
HCL has been eating my brain (again), ever since
brooklinegirl posted her thoughts about the movie. Like many people, HCL fics don't do much for me. Usually, it's a question of characterization or character motivation. There's always a little something that is lacking or off about them (uh yeah, I'm thinking Joe/Billy). However, after reading the comments in
brooklinegirl's journal, I realized that my take on the movie J/B relationship is quite different from what others see in it. I think I may be the only person who thinks Billy is not in love with Joe and has never been.
It's not that I wouldn't like to see them together or in love (as corny as that is for the two of them), but I think that many people see a fairytale where there is none and, as such, write fics and situations that are twisted to fit their view of the J/B relationship, which I don't share. To me, the movie is all about the lack of reciprocity in feelings. Joe's in love with Billy and Billy's not. Billy loves music more than anything else. Joe keeps wanting Billy, and wanting more from Billy than Billy will ever give to him. It's this imbalance that triggers everything: Joe not getting what he wants and taking it anyway by "doing" Billy when he's passed out, Billy's anger at being taken advantage of (because why would he be so angry at Joe if Joe and him had been lovers before or until then? Just because he was unconscious? I don't buy that. They're both able to put up with so much shit from the other, why would this be such a big deal?), and finally Joe realizing/accepting that Billy doesn't want him, and thus proceeding to fuck up the only thing that really matters to Billy, the music, by pissing in Seymour's drink.
Anyway, I could go on and on about this. I do agree with some/many points that were raised by (from the top of my head)
raveninthewind,
aukestrel,
engenda,
lynnmonster, and
cmshaw, though. So, it's not like I've been watching a totally different movie altogether. *snicker*
I wish I could discuss the movie rather than write about it. I wrote half an essay for
brooklinegirl's LJ and ended up locking it for my own personal enjoyment.
Anyway, I'm not trying to convince anyone and if you have a different opinion, it's great, it's fine, and I would like to hear it, if you feel like sharing it. It's just that, sometimes, I get the impression that I'm the only one who's watching HCL with a modicum of "objectivity" while everyone else is reading a lot more into it because of the Hugh/Callum love.
Maybe it IS just an impression, I don't know. *shrugs*
I just needed to get this out of my head because I need my brain for other activities. *bg*
