Where is Your Sense of Adventure? fabunobo July 6 2006, 20:20:41 UTC
You could just buy and install your own cabinets and then get custom made countertops made to order like I did and save a kajillion dollars? You do realize that cabinets just sorta "sit" in place. You attach them to the wall with like, two screws. The countertops are attached by putting screws at the corners via brackets that come attached the the cabinets already. We got our countertops at Lowes and paid like, $200 for them including the end caps which are very difficult to do yourself and not have it look like shit.

You did this?! Where did you get your cabinets?!

I may need to sit you down and pick your brain. I am all over saving a kajillion dollars.

We bought the cabinets at Lowes too. Both the floor cabinets and the wall cupboards. Note that we got the cheapie unfinished ones which we then painted gray to match our color scheme. However, we could have also stained them if we wanted to. We drilled and mounted our own handles. We got specialty handles to match our 1940s existing metal cabinets, but there are a ton of fun handles online too.

You could probably also order more fancy cabinets if you done like the cheapie unfinished ones. Note that the key is that you'd save a ton of labor dollars if you just shoved them into place yourself.

Slightly in shock that you paid $100K+ to have your home remodeled and didn't even get a kitchen out of the deal?

What the?

These are the cabinets we got..

This is the countertop style we got. You need to special order this so that the end caps are included and it’s the right size.

The name of the company in Groton you're thinking of is Baker Miller Lumber. Another place that may have some really beautiful but painfully higher priced cabinetry is Cayuga Lumber, across the street from the bus depot downtown (the place is very un-assuming looking, but a few years ago I looked at some cabinets in there that were incredibly beautiful ... 100 % cherry ... *sigh*). I've heard the keep your socks ad, but durned if I can think of the name of the place ... Yes, both the big box home stores have cabinets of all types and price ranges, and installing them is a great home project.

Hey if you want this it's yours. :) It's empty so you could build it from scratch. If your not interested no biggie I will just delete it.
