Have you tried temp agencies? They often have temp-to-perm jobs that let you get your foot in the door. If nothing else, a temp job would give you some experience and income while you're working on getting a more permanent position.

that's an idea... the problem with temping is arranging for daycare for Birdy... I need something steady to be able to afford the daycare as most don't like the drop-in model so I'd have to pay for full time even if I didn't have a placement
