I love the serendipity of browsing libraries. The smell of the books, the exciting discovery of a literary treasure that was previously unknown, the quietness. Libraries have always seemed like Christmas to me, because all the books are free. Sure, you have to return the book, but still, it's pretty exciting to me ( Read more... )

Browsing livejournal I stumbled upon this entry, and I agree with you oh so very much. I hope books will never become obsolete because no e- can evoke the same captivation and tranquility as a good book in your hands.
My mother is a translator and my father an editor of books, so the love for reading runs in my family, and no computer can replace that.

Computers can replace books, unfortunately. There's nothing wrong with computers and e-readers except that they are very expensive and many people can't afford them (see: Digital divide). Electronic files are also easy to modify and difficult to archive. These are my main issues with e-stuffs.

Aesthetically, no e-device could replace the sensuous paper-book experience.
