When people see my ears (1") I get a lot of "why would you do that, that's disgusting, your ears are never going to go back.." and I get a lot of dirty looks.

Some people are just very rude.

That's sweet :) Some of my coworkers (women in their 40's) asked about the process, so I told them. And they seemed genuinely interested in what I was saying because I was so knowledgeable. I think that's the key. If people sense that you know what you're talking about, they tend to listen and receive you better :)
