 ...I mean torture, of course.  Republicans like to justify torture with the 24-style ticking bomb scenario: THERE IS A BOMB, WE HAVE CAPTURED A TERRORIST WHO KNOWS WHERE IT IS, THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GET TO IT, AND OF COURSE WE KNOW THAT THE TERRORIST KNOWS, SO ZOMG DO WE TORTURE?

That's a really nice analysis.

Violence breeds violence. It might be effective in the very short run, but in the long run it makes your position much more threatened.
